Hi, i was kind of wondering on spread axle, for those who have dump valve, when we are empty or have light load and if/when we dump air out of front axle is it legal to release brakes so they don't lock up? Thx

Do you ever think the DOT would approve of anyone at anytime disabling any of their brakes?

Merely dumping the air from the bags isn't gaining you anything...and could even be counterproductive as the tires will bounce, scuff, and drag causing uneven wear. If you don't have a way to lift them off the ground, leave the bags inflated even when you are empty. If the wheels are lifted off the ground, it doesn't matter if the brakes are functioning or not.

ANY tires in contact with the road need to have functioning brakes, though.

most of us with split use them around turns. The tire with no weight on it drags much better then one with 20,000 on it. It will get wrecked of you drag it around sharp turns

The original poster didnt indicate he raised the axle or anything in his original post but either way, nothing needs to be done nor should be done with any brakes...

We all know an inside dash dump valve is WRONG unless mounted outside and automatically deactivated if the vehicle exceeds 10mph:

    From 393.205
    (g) Air suspension exhaust controls. The air suspension exhaust controls must not have the capability to exhaust air from the suspension system of one axle of a two-axle air suspension trailer unless the controls are either located on the trailer, or the power unit and trailer combination are not capable of traveling at a speed greater than 10 miles per hour while the air is exhausted from the suspension system.

I didn't know an incredibly retarded rule like that existed.

My cab mounted rear axle dump valve has helped me get out of the way of traffic in some tight situations.

IIRC Canada actually requires lift axle brakes to be disabled. There are certain air/electric valves that can disable the brakes when the axle is lifted, but they normally work in conjunction with lift axle valving.
