Or a lumber rack? And it sure as heck looks as if it is sticking out the side.

And that looks like an aluminum trailer. Cant tell for sure, but it looks as if he hooked the straps to an aluminum rubrail.

no edge protectors no big deal i never do it unless its a true sharp edge like metal or something like that but the stap on the outside of the rubrail are illegal and the twisting of the straps are personal preference not mine but to some they like to twist they're straps i just go a little tighter takes right care of that flapping the breeze thing they sometime do

straps are ALWAYS hooked to the rub rail. inside or outside makes no difference. but i understand dot prefers inside.

rub rails don't get torn off. or it would be illegal to use chains. they put more presure then straps will ever do.

edge protectors aren't needed unless the load is sharp and can cut the straps.

i must be missing something too cuz the only thing i see is a driver not paying attention and risking a cell phone fine.

and i've heard some states will fine you for having twisted straps. (WASHINGTON)

Unless you have a hook bar that's attached to your cross members then you really have no choice but to hook to the rail

You hook chains to the chain spools or stake pockets not rub rails
