Stevens Transport Aviary . . cont'

Was at my new house installing a garage door opener today.
So I emailed the movers and asked when the truck would arrive. Hoping for tomorrow. Was suppose to pick up last sunday.
"Late next week or early the week after. He's delivering a load into California, then will pick up yours."
So you see, it isn't just meat and vegetables that end up with dispatch problems and scrambling for deliveries.
good thing I didn't really expect them this week. I got time.
And I have another garage door opener to install tomorrow.

 

I guess things have changed at Stevens since I was interested in them a couple of years ago.

An acquaintance of mine here in Michigan, a Michigan CDL school grad, called Stevens to see about getting on with them. He has a CDL, no experience, and hasn't used his license yet - it's been over a year (I didn't even get into why he waited so long with him.) He figured Stevens would be a good place to start, what with their training program and route structure. When he called, his recruiter told him (after saying how "impressed" he was with the resume. Seriously??), the guy said my buddy would first have to go to Denver for their (unpaid) 3-week training school as if he didn't have a CDL. He would have to pay for "a permit" plus the hotel plus the med card plus his own food and other items. Assuming he successfully completed the course, he would go back to Dallas for orientation and then go out with his trainer.

He asked why Denver and not the school in Dallas and the recruiter told him it had to do with Texas being a "closed" state and all CDL holders did that. I've never heard that before and recall a number of people in my class - in Dallas - that had CDL's from various non-Texas states and were starting with me. Nothing was said about Denver and I didn't know Stevens even had a school in Denver, so what's up with that?

 

You have to be a resident of Texas now, not just living in the hotel that Stevens puts you up in. New Texas law. They work with a school in Denver, and also St. Louis I believe.

 

Wow. Thanks for that. Who knew. It must be a money thing for Texas, though I can't imagine they're saving as much as the students would spend at the nearby grocery store (as I recall) or on fuel for the extra trucks.

I just called my buddy and told him this. He said the recruiter did say something about a family member who is also a legal Texas resident "signing for you" but he wasn't sure of the details since he doesn't have any family member in Texas. That state is becoming more and more strange...

 

The school in Denver is Careers World Wide and if he has his CDL it is just like a refresher. It is 3 weeks and he will have to do everything the non-cdl holders will do except testing out at the DMV for his permit as long as he has a Class A and no air brake exemption(he had to pass his test). He will test out of the school at the end and even do the drive test with one of the testers to verify he could pass the test. Then on to Dallas for OR1, etc.

I am sure someone else will back me but they want to make sure he can drive and wont come in with no seat time in over a year. As for Denver over Dallas, Texas recently changed there rules, well last year and only Texas residents can attend a Texas school.

The school in Denver cost money. The tuition is financed and can be covered partially by Stevens and deducted weekly. It can also be paid off totally to CWW at a much better price. Food is your responsibility and there are a couple stores within walking distance of the House which you can stay at for $150. As for in Dallas Stevens provides lunch and some dinners(if you can call it that), Sunday through when you leave with a trainer or go home, while you are on the yard at OR1( if out at 5pm no dinner from Stevens. If you pass through everything there you are hired Thursday and hit the road with a trainer where you pay for everything out on the road.

 

Interesting. I will pass this on to my friend. It might change his mind about Stevens.

 

well the above information changes things quite a bit... TX residents only... ah well... off to choice number 2 if thats the case....

 

Waiting for a repower to HEB in San Antonio. Does anyone know where it is and whether they have parking? The address my DM sent me doesn't appear to have docks. I did a search nearby and came up with what looks like a DC, but true to Google form, that particular bldg is not labled.
