trucks use fuel, not gas. fuel is around 4 bucks a gallon, depending on your location. on average, if you keep your foot off the throttle, most trucks get between 5 to 7 miles a gallon. the higher number being the ones who manage the throttle.
1000 mile trip @ 5 miles per gallon for example, is 200 gallons of fuel multiplied by 4 bucks a gallon is 800 bucks. now you know why you see so many owner operators poking around at 60 some odd miles an hour. throttle management means less fuel burned means more money in the pocket.
if your brokering your freight the correct way and not running for 1.50 a mile, then yeah, you will make money.Homemade1959 Thanks this. -
thanks so much! does the recent increase in fuel prices upset you in this business because it affects your profit?
-
the price of the freight should rise with the cost of fuel, or else you are not working, you are volunteering

while i am not an owner op, i do drive for a small company. we haul scrap metal, aluminum, you name it, we haul it and get paid very well for that. our yard has an on site fuel tank, so the more you buy the cheaper it becomes (unless its from pilot LOL)
but they would rather us run the trucks than to be shutting them off and having one not start. one starter failure and the price to replace it on the road is exponential. they do not see the value in saving a few bucks in fuel. we dont sit long anyways. check in, get loaded with scrap, check out and go dump, then do it all over again.
now an actual owner operator may have another opinion, and that is fine. money saved is money saved, no matter where you get the savings. if the weather is nice, im all for shutting the truck off. i hate hearing that motor all the time. -
Thanks so much cadillacdude
your info has been so helpful and given me a lot of insight on what these costs might look like
Additionally, I am looking for owner/operators that have an opinion on Fuel costs in this industry! Please PM me or respond here. Thank you! -
I smell a Troll. Yes the more it costs US the more it will cost YOU. I keep hearing This NEW Diesel cost so much more to make. Liars. Gasoline costs way more. The truck motors manage it so much better than the older ones, they are just praying on the truckers. & public. The News people say More, More, More, Truckers have no More. I raise my rates, or get it on your own. Mc D's has Fish on sale for two bucks tonight!

An owner/operator that has an option?
On fuel costs no less?
Never happen
-
I know rising fuel costs must be of concern but I am wondering if there are areas where there are a higher percentage of owner/operators vs. individuals who work for a company and don't have to pay for their fuel. please PM me if you have been directly affected/have an opinion on this issue
