I have been told that the D12 needs an overhead every 120k. Just had mine done after 110k and it sounds so much better, smoother idle with less tapping noise and starts much quicker. Power seems up also. Will have to report on the mpg but I definitely now it's better. Running with just 1000 lbs in the box from Seattle to L.A. Is not a fair comparison, although I did average 8.4 for the trip.

Had mine done 2 wks ago then had it done again last week because something didn't seem right. Turns out the first guy did it wrong. A couple of the intakes and exhaust were off and ALL of the injectors had been only adjusted by half of spec. Also found one of my egr connections leaking and the tech said that the front slip joint on the ex manifold is starting to leak. Not bad yet but I'll go ahead and get that taken care if soon. Bought the egr clamp kit, just need to put it on.

When we have checked our D12's very very few need adjustment. As for the engine needing the shims to alter the cleareance they arent bad to put in. But the kit is very pricey. And unless you are really good with a screw driver...:)...your going to need the barring tool from Volvo. After doing a couple that needed one or two shims changed out because of being slightly off we noticed zero MPG difference. Being off just isnt that big of a deal to MPG in a turbocharged engine.

I had the inital set done and actually noticed a decrease. Not much, but it's done to satisfy warranty.

Maintenance supv in our shop says only one after the first 100,000 miles. After that he does not recommend it as too many engines have failed. Mechanic I use says 1/year...pick your poison.

It definetly depends on the shop. But the initial one is usually to make sure everything is ok from the factory. At one time a few years back we identified a batch of bad Camshafts during this initial (100,000 mile) adjustment. In my opinion once a year is a waste of time and energy. But its up to the owner of the tractor.

volvo it's all about maint. this trucks are designed with this concept. if you 'r looking at the european truck owners you will see they have two books on the dash : the Bible and the maint. manual. both of them are well read and respected. if you want a truck to be patched now and then and to start scratching you head while you use 4 flashes on the shoulder you can try freightliner. that one was made to keep in the tool box, wires, zip ties, scotch tape and most important a box of gorilla. or a cell phone, the main tool of the mc'donalds generation drivers.
the valves and injectors adjustment are very important, don't neglect them.actually, from my experience with volvo trucks ( including fh 10, to fh 16) these trucks are giving you back whatever you are throwing at them. give them s****t and they will throw it back to you. give them love and they will love you. Regarding the job on the cylinder head it's about the fuel you use and how you are driving. careless driving = 100k miles head adjustment. careful driving = 250-300k miles head adjustment.
