I was wondering if I start the process of finding out if I have sleep apnea on my own and it is discovered that I do have it, will I be disqualified to drive until they put me on a cpap machine and get the results of compliance with it?

Thanks for any and all replies.

Also, if I am found to have sleep apnea and put on a cpap machine, do I notify my employer at that time?

IF they find that you have it and you get a script to get the machine, I would start using it as soon as you can. BUT the important thing is to have a doctor give you a plan of treatment - use the machine is one simple plan.

Not that I know of, but when you have a physical, it has to be well documented.

If you are determined to have sleep apnea you can't be qualified until you have documented effective treatment .
You have a minimum of 1 month waiting for recertification after starting CPAP http://nrcme.fmcsa.dot.gov/mehandbook/respiratory4_dis_secondary_sleep_ep.aspx

Just pee in a bottle so you don't leave the sleeper and you'll be fine .

There are more options than CPAP for treating sleep apnea. Go to Amazon and get the book....The Truck & Bus Driver Sleep Apnea Handbook: What Every OTR Driver Needs to Know About Sleep Apnea.

Compliance to treatment is the key. Go to Amazon and get a copy of The Truck & Bus Driver Sleep Apnea Handbook.

in some cases even a bit of surgery can remove apnea entirely. the trick is finding a good sleep dr that knows their ####. im lucky with my v.a that i have such a dr.
