Thanks for the response. I did quite a bit of research into Lone Mountain Trucking and have heard a lot of good things about them. I have nearly enough in savings to buy it outright, but that would leave me very little start-up money. My eventual goal is to move into running my own truck without having to contract with a major carrier, this is more or less a chance to gain some experience with running the truck myself and making some of my own financial decisions. I'm working on a business plan right now that will allow me the independence to drive when and where it is most lucrative. Forming an LLC definitely, in my mind at least, seems the way to go. I have a bit more to learn about the business aspect of driving, I just wish I understood it a little better before taking the plunge.

I have a few friends that have leased from Lone Mountain and have had no problems. Of course you have to pay on time to have no problems, but that is with any finance company. They sell fleet trucks. They don't build trucks, they didn't put the 400,000 miles on them, etc. so anyone that blames any dealer or finance company for the performance of the truck they bought is an idiot.

Ok, that being said, why would you want to be leased to USX? You want to go on your own someday? Lease to a carrier that pays percentage and let's you pick and choose your loads. There are quite a few discussed here on a daily basis like Schneider Choice, Landstar, Mercer, F2F, etc. All of them will give you better service and you'll make more per mile. Not to mention, you'll learn what freight lanes pay and numerous other tidbits you need to know before going on your own. The notion of more miles equals more money will only leave you with a worn our truck.

Landstar is a company that we've been considering moving to, the only reason I say USX is because that's where I'm currently working. In all honesty, I'm afraid of making too many big changes at once and finding myself in over my head.

Why set yourself up for failure though? If they can't even figure out who you talk to sign a lease, it will not end well. LS can be a great place for an intelligent truck driver who can see opportunity. Heck we have some power only accounts that are terminal to terminal and will pay more than USX, and we consider them cheap. It takes a little while to get approved over here, but give it a shot. It WILL be a learning experience, but you control your own destiny here, not some guy who is trying to control 30 other trucks that goes home at 5pm.

I hope your hearing what fortycalglock is telling ya..levay is over the lease department,iv never dealt with him but i know the women under him "not posting her name" but she is very rude..just like most at usx..i just turned in my drive tech an equipment yesterday an starting with ls Mon..usx is quickly becoming such a joke..i wonder with them closing the NC an colton yards if they are having some money trouble lol..but if you think it will get better owning your own truck working for usx than being a company driver it won't..you will still be laid over, wait 4-5hrs for lumper fees, get disconnected when you call in an so much more..iv work for usx twice an they USE to be a good company but now with all the rude **** they have in the office its not worth it..either way good luck..

several pieces of information for you. I have a truck from lone mountain and I am leased to usxi so I can surely help you more than someone who hasn't but likes to give what they think anyway. First the bad. Usxpress tags through oklahoma which for some unknown reason has started asking for proff of previous registration on lease financed trucks like from lone mountain. You wont be able to get the previous cab card so you will end up having to pay for last two years. . Good luck to you. I attempted to go through Georgia to get my plates but ran into the same problem. I have since learned many states are starting this but I dont know which ones. This only applies to lease financed trucks and not trucks bought from a regular dealer through conventional financing. It cost me an extra three grand. Which usxi will make you pay up front if tagging through them. Lone Mountain knows this but wont volunteer that piece of info to you. That's the bad. Other than that they were a pleasure to do business with. great truck and when all is paid it wont be anymore than any conventionally financed truck after all payments are made. As far as making it at USX it can be done if like any place else you watch your fuel cost along with all your other expences. Personally I don't like they sliding pay scale cause its hard to keep up with. You can do well with one of the agents running percentage which is what I do. Contact for that route is Phyllis Shelton in recruiting. call the main line and just ask for her. People will tell you Usxi is not a good place for owner ops but if that is true then ask yourself why there are so many successful o/o's here

OK, let me chime in here. I was a Company team driver at USX for 2 years. We bought a truck and we are now at F2F. We had a great experience with USX and can only remember one call ever with someone who was rude or seemed uncaring. That said, I am not a fan of the sliding pay scale. If you want the security of a big freight base and a company to backstop you and you are OK getting paid mileage instead of percentage I would look at two other options.

Covenant is all team freight and they will keep you moving, they also pay a $2,500 bonus every quarter, $10,000 a year if you bring your own truck. They call it an equity bonus.

ConWay is a great option also. I have friends leased on to them and they are making great money and consistently getting 6000+ miles a week.

Landstar will be a great choice eventually but I think if you talk to Landstar drivers they will tell you the first year is hard. Booking your own loads is about relationships and, if you really want to make money, it is about not caring where the you go. There are consistent freight lanes where the money is made and there are black holes where you may decide to run empty for 600 miles to find a load that pays anything. Boston and Denver come to mind. So if you want to go to Landstar so you can book your own loads and go where and when you want you will likely struggle.

You live in New Jersey, You will find it very easy to get home but you will have a heck of a time finding a paying load to get you back out on the road.
