It's the TSA not the FBI and they check your finger prints and criminal record, that's about it. Contrary to what many drivers believe, it's not a "security clearance" or any special security type screening. No, you're not James Bond the super trucker. It probably takes them 15 minutes to do all this and you will probably have the "ok" within two weeks. In my case it took less than one. Oh yeah....and if you already have a DEA, FBI, CIA or any other government security clearance you will still have to go through this government nonsense unless it is a TSA clearance. In that case you might be covered.

Study that hazmat chapter over and over till you know the material in your sleep.A couple times is not nearly enough.Once you know that then take the many online tests. You pass them then your ready for the big test.I took the test and got 100% but I studied morning noon and night for 3 months.
-
What happens if you get your hazmat endorsement but fail the test when you go to renew? Can you just retake the test the next day or do you have to start the whole process, TSA, Background check and everything all over again?

Diab33tus Thanks this.

I don't believe you will have to retake the TSA background check if you fail the HAZMAt test.
-
You have to go thru the entire process as if its your first time.My hazmat was a renewel. You fill out an applcation on the phone, they give you a referrence number which you give to the fingerprinting place but not untill you take the hazmat test.Ya its alot of fun.

Thanks for all the info! I think ill head down in the morning and take the test, might as well take double and tanker while I'm there.

Then it's like any endorsement. You have 3 chances to pass the test. If you fail all 3 you pay again.
Id assume that you'd want to renew your endorsements with ample time before your license expires since you need to do all endorsements at that time. Plan ahead. Fingerprint a couple months early. If you wwork in hazmat and do it daily there's no real reason to study. You already deal with it and should know the rules and regs. Never hurts to brush up though -
