    May be you didn't understand
A Load from A to Z let say 1000 miles
    1000 miles / 5 MPG = 200 Gallons right? 200 Gallons X $4 per Gallon = $800 Fuel cost right?
I Charge $800x $4 Per Mile = $3200 for the load to deliver it
Now I don't run like a fruit cake cost to cost and @ the end of the month I find that all my hard earned cash went to flying J Petro etc.
You can run your truck Like The post office & Get TONS of Freight @ 42 cent per package
Or You Can Run Your Truck Like Fedex,UPS and Get Lesser Freight with bigger Pay @ $50 a packege
To Get paid like I do you can't have a boat load of expense's Like $2000/month truck payments and so on
You Can't expect a load that pays good every time you are empty
I let every body haul all the cheap ones and then provide my services when all the dipsticks got their belly full of cheap freight
most of the time the good paying freight is offered only when the supply of trucks are down
I didn't invent the wheel it was their long before I learned how to drive trucks I Just was not paying attention
    So it's up to you
Do you want post office Freight ?
    Or Priority Freight?

I understand quite well what you're saying, but I'm comparing leasing with USX and driving company for them, there is no negotiating on the cpm.

No I don't make much more than a company driver, what I like is the choice of operating area, loads, and when I am ready to run. I can also choose to take the shorter runs, which pay a little more, and don't put a lot of wear and tear on the truck. Overall there are perks to being a company driver as well as being an L/P.

I appreciate the feedback, still very much up in the air on what I'm going to do and it helps. Seems a lot of it comes down to 'when it does, it does; when it don't, it don't.' I know that in theory there is money to be made, but I'm loathe to dedicate myself to working to an early grave to find it.
