or are there other drivers that still truck the old fashioned way? by old fashioned i mean NO gps,NO qualcom,NO vorad,NO elogs or the like,NO apu, NO super singles,NO auto transmission, and NO restrictions whatsoever on the truck and/or the engine.I fuel where i desire.I carry a laptop but rarely turn it on.I do not have a smartphone but am anticipating the purchase only because my current cellphone is almost 3 years old.

there are times that i feel all alone by using loose leaf logs,my cb,cellphone, 2010 paper truckers atlas, and at times a birddog.I carry a decent selection of real tools and use them to avoid sitting on the side of the hwy.I will visegrip an airline to keep moving.i regulary blow out my airfilter and replace it when it is past that point.I carry spare lights/bulbs,wire,tapes,turbo clamps, regular clamps, water, coolant, oil, hub oil,and coveralls to do whatever.i carry an airline and gauge.i have a valve stem tool.if i can repair it or replace it,it is on the truck for the most part.

i just was thinking that i rarely see any driver truly going over their truck at a truckstop much less actually replacing/repairing common items.heck,i rarely see a pti by most.they just wake up and go.

I can drive with or without the gadgets. The gadgets make the job much easier.

Great respect for the old timers!

watching TV at truckstop for load listings, phones dedicated for drivers at every booth.... The know how to get 'er done and off the road fixes... I'd bet the majority of these greenhorns don't even know how or why the Eisenhower Interstate system exists.

Not me.. truck breaks.. trailer leaks.. tire blows.. I call 1800fixmyride... and then I get my wifi hotspot / laptop going .. watch a movie.. cook food in the microwave and wait for the go ahead to make more money. I dont own this truck and have no intention on making my life harder then it needs to be. Plus god only knows if I would get blamed if I attempted to fix something and it failed. What would happen if a Mega Carrier driver clamped a air line and kept going only to get in a accident later.. we all know even if that clamp had nothing to do with it the carrier would pin that accident on the driver. Its their truck I only touch what I am told to touch! If it was my truck then maybe I would be more interested in all the do it yourself stuff. As for gadgets.. pagers were great technology not long ago.. sure dont miss trying to find a payphone to get back to someone. I embrace any device that makes my life better.. if you dont congrats..

One thing I will say tho.. I was trained by a old school trucker with no gps .. no google maps / laptops or anything like that. Road atlas was my only tool. I learned how to route plan the right way. I think any newbie should be taught how to do this job with little or no devices. Because those electronics will fail at some point or another. They are only tools.

I worked for a company that had a policy that you were not to work on the truck unless certified.
