Here is the deal with recaps... It depends on what the use is... If your mainly hauling around 30,000lbs in a box. Quality recaps should be fine and you may never have an issue. However, if your hauling say tanker, and are at max weight every single load... 52,000+ NO and I mean NO amount of checking your tire pressure etc etc etc... Will help the recap. It's only a matter of a short time and they will be toast... Just seen too much of it.

I'm running recap drives now and last summer had no problem on the hot texas roads. that being said, lower RR will pay for it self in fuel savings. Its not quite as drastic on trialers, but with my fuel saving on drives (went to Xone XDA recaps) I save around $7000.00 per year. I can buy a new set of tires every year just on savings.
Now trailer isnt as drastic but by using a low RR tire you can save tons of fuel. (literally lol) -
I'm right around 33,000 or 34,000 on my drives for most loads. (79 or 80K total) Never had a problem. It depends on who you get them done by. There are a lot of cheep companies that give recaps a bad name.
I had them rip off a trailer once, but the tread was down to 3/32 and the casing was in horrible shape. The casing actually blew before the recap ripped off. -
Yeah, but do you get surge that has potential to put 40,000+ on your drives as you go down the road? I used to have a boss that would get quality recaps all the time... but also got virgins... We always had recap problems, on the tankers... Actually many times in really cold weather too... When the tire heats but in cold weather... It's just what I've seen and experienced. Thankfully, my new boss doesn't run recaps on anything.
Wait a minute, I just seen you have been trucking for a year and you have an opinion on recaps? Hell it takes me two years to wear out a set of virgin drives on a tanker... they would probably last even longer pulling around a box or a reefer.Last edited: Jun 16, 2013

Recaps are great if you have a complete understanding of how to avoid the rotten apples. Educate yourself about them or stay away from them, It's that simple.

I haul flatbed, so I have had 40k on my trailer. Never had that on my drives.
