It is what you make of it, every company has its ups and downs and bs to put up with. Trucking is not for everyone, and it is not just a job, its pretty much a lifestyle. I have been out of the trucking industry for a year and a half and looking to get back in now that I got things with the va straight. Not sure where to go though with four years of experience. I have been company, lease, and a trainer as well. New guys, you gotta put in your time as a grunt before you get anything good. Bouncing around from company to company isn't good, and I recommend you have a few years in before you even think of leasing. I made the mistake of leasing as a newbie and failed miserably. Being a successful o/o or ip is all about time and money management. I honestly think most of the whiners and complainers did something wrong and not the company itself. You shouldn't believe every thing you hear either, if all of the big companies were so bad then they wouldn't still be in business. It is what it is.....

I worked for JB Hunt out of Chicago for 3 1/2 years. Great equipment and benefits. I averaged 50k a year. Their company so it is their rules. They lose a lot of good drivers because of corporate policy. I was put on 6 months probation because someone called in and said I hit their car while merging in stop and go traffic. Adjuster found no marks or paint on my rig but I was convicted and sentenced before they ever saw the other car. They told me they paid the woman $4600.00. So this supposed accident is on my DAC report.

I would take Roehl off that list, based on my experience with them. In my experience, as a driver so green grass was jealous of me, they bent over backward to help me out and keep me running. I averaged, averaged mind you, 2913 miles a week for the 8 months I worked with them. I had a rash of incidents-- minor incidents, but incidents nonetheless- at about my 4-month mark, and they worked with me to figure out why these things were happening and how I could fix them. Never had a problem getting paid, and while I wasn't making a dollar a mile, I was a new driver, so what did I expect?
I was never talked down to, never treated poorly, my equipment was well-used but also well-maintained, and my raises and performance bonuses came through right on schedule. If my mother had not needed knee surgery, and had I not re-located to the PNW, I'd be happy to go back to driving for them. -
For a lot of people the answer to the phrase "Companies To Avoid" would be: Anyone with a D.O.T. number
