Hi I've been trucking for about 2 years and have been on ele logs, but changed companys and now I'm on paper logs. My ? is how does running past the 8 day figure and still be legal?? I've heard people say (use it or lose it), what does that mean. Appreicate the help and examples would be great also :)

Most log books from JJKeller explain a recap fairly well inside the cover.

midnight of the 8th day you get back the hours you used 8 days ago. If you were on duty for say 13.5hrs 8 days back then on the next day you could use'em
    1) 10 10 60 10
    2) 10 20 50 20
    3) 10 30 40 30
    4) 10 40 30 40
    5) 10 50 20 50
    6) 10 60 10 60
    7) 10 70 0 70
    8) 0 60 10 70 As you can see from the example on the 7th day you've used all your hours on the
8th you enter 0 and count back 7 for your hour on duty last 7 days = 60
Giving you 10 to use on the ninth day and from this point on for the next seven
days you will get back 10hrs at midnight. Its called running on your recap.
    I hope this helps.

Not sure what they mean by "use it or lose it" other than it's not like AT&T's rollover minutes, where unused minutes from one week roll over to the next. What method is best (slow, but steady all week long, or balls to the wall, then reset) depends on your company, the amount of freight, and the average length of haul, how many appointment times you are forced to deal with, and your preferred way to run, given your options.

My reset ended on the 10th this month at noon.

    6/10 : worked 7 hours
    6/11 : 7.50
    6/12 : 9
    6/13 : 8.75
    6/14 : 9.50
    6/15 : 10.75
    6/16 : 11

That's 63.5 right there, usually people take a 34 but you don't have to.
    Still can work 6.5 hours

    6/17 : 3.75
    6/18 : 9.75
    6/19 : 7.5
    Today : 9 hours avail.

I usually would have reset already but have a load going home so no time for a reset.
    All while remaining legal.

    Hope that helped.

You can run from here until the end of time without a 34 hour reset as long as you don't go over 70 hours in an 8 day period.

if you hit your 70 hrs on the 8th day exactly or close to than on the 9th day whatever time you ran in the 1st day of your 8 day week you can run that amount of time for the 9th day whatever hours you dont use on the 9th day that you ran on your first day get transfered over to the following days (1st day ran 8 hrs but n 9th day only ran 7 hrs 1 hr transfers over to next day) than on 10th day you can run what you ran on the 2 day + any left over from day 9 (2nd day you ran 8 hrs +1 hr from day 9 = 9hrs available for day 10) and if you took a day off on day 11 than whatever time you ran on day 3 and any extra hours left over from the other days will be available on day 12 + the hours you ran on day 4. and this carry's on till the next time you do a reset.

If you take a day off during the week of your 8 days ie you get your 10 hr mandated break and take another 10-14 hrs off than you can have more time to run without having to run what you ran in the prior week i did say this above but trying to give another explanation on it as it can get confusing.

run no more than 9 hrs... for the first seven days....on the eight day run no more 7 hrs...then repeat same cycle...week after week..you will never run out of hrs.....and never have to do a 34 hr reset
