Has anyone here ever done their own inframe or overhaul...I mean all the work, just buying the parts.....how long did it take and what did you spend??
also I assume when people talk about an inframe they are talking of leaving the engine in for the overhaul...working from the top,
if thats so how do you
change the crank..???
doing your own inframe

How much can u afford to have in down time while u figure it out? Time u spend vs a shop that already knows what their doin and has all the tools and can knock it out and u get back on the road, unless this is just a restore project or for fun then i say dive on in... Not to mention u do it and #### it up ur on ur own a shop that ##### it up they fix it if their worth a ####

Thats the problem, you dont. You hope the crank is smooth and true then gauge what new bearings you need. You "roll" them in with the crank in place. You take the hood and radiator out any ways, why not just pull the whole engine and do it right.

In a diesel engine inframe as it is called, The engine stays in the frame. The only thing you can't do,( I guess i should'nt say that someone has probably done it) Is change the crank. It depends on the engine make, cat can be expensive where detroit is cheep. I have done detroit ddecIv for about 6500 including the bullgear. So it just depends, also some motors you can't change the cam bearings in. But for the most part you can compleatly rebuild your engine in the truck. I would say about 95% of engine work on class 8 trucks is done in the frame.

I just finished mine. A 2004 MBN C15 that I rebuilt as a 6NZ.
Cat Platinum Kit - Cyl Packs, Oil pump Water pump, head, injectors, bearings, exhaust sleeves, filters, all O rings and gaskets
Reman 6NZ Cam
All Rockers + Rocker Shafts
Ceramic Coated manifold
New Turbo
New belts
New CAC hoses, clamps
Oil + misc
It took me a few weeks but a Cat shop would not have rebuilt it the way I wanted. I have around $25k in parts, but this would be a fair bit cheaper in the US!!
You will need some special tools and a cherry picker or crane, big torque wrench etc....do a LOT of research before you start and ask lots of questions.

The bearings are softer than the crank so with clean oil and good oil pressure the crank will have minimal wear and still be within specs.
There are times when you will take apart an engine for an inframe overhaul and find you need to remove the block for machining so now it becomes an out-of-frame. -
say for a DD 15...what would a good competent shop get for a full inframe....and an out of frame
-
I need some more information also why change the crank, give me some history as to why you are doing and in-frame. -
i am just getting info

Penn detriot said a inframe on a 60 series pre emissions is 19500 so I imagine the dd15 is more.I remember 10 years ago you could get a inframe for 6000 glad I sold my truck.
