I have recently purchased a 1993 Volvo FE42. The truck runs and drives beautifully and is a major step up from the 1989 Ford it is replacing. My one problem is that it is rather finnicky when I go to start it. Sometimes it will start right up, other times I will try a few dozen times before it wants to start. It seems that there is something that I am not doing consistently with the key switch. When it starts, it starts right up, but other times it won't even turn the starter motor when I bring the key around to the start position. Sometimes it won't even let me turn it past preheat to start.
The manual says that I should engage the key to the preheat position, then release it. When the intake preheater light goes out, I am to depress the accellerator and turn it to start until the engine starts, then release the pedal. This procedure seems to almost never work.
Does anyone have any similar experience with these trucks? Or maybe I just have a worn out keyswitch?
My truck has the Volvo VED7 engine.
Thanks,
BCassell

Sounds like a bad switch. If your handy you ought to be able to take it out and see. If not visible get elec meter and check. Sure that little guy has been turned a few times since 93'.

It's possible... I forgot to mention that in many attempts to start, it will allow the starter to turn the engine, but it just won't start. Almost like there is a fuel solenoid that isn't opening up. My uncle had a number of Cat 3208 engines over the years, and the fuel solenoid was notorious for sticking on those. Thing is, I can't find one on this truck (or any mention of one in the engine service manual). Maybe the fuel pump isn't getting any current.

That is going to be your key to getting it fixed. Assuming everything with the starter is Kosher, you're not getting voltage to the starter when the problem occurs. And your job is to find out why.
I would verify that you're getting voltage FROM your switch when the problem occurs. If not, start by checking for loose connections and cleaning them. You're very likely to find the problem there.

See, that's the thing. On most attempts to start, the starter motor will engage and turn the engine, so I've got compression and momentum in the engine, but it acts as if I don't have any fuel to the cylinders. Almost as if something electrically controlled is not allowing fuel to flow.

Best thing would be take it to a shop for a diagnosis, then decide what to do.

On your Volvo, try this... First of all, the ignition switch is designed to only engage the starter "once" without shutting it back to "off" and starting all over. That keeps you from starting it if it's already running. That's why it jams up when you re-try to start it. When you turn the key (just short of engaging the starter), you should see the orange "zig-zag in a circle" light up on the dash for about 50 seconds before it goes out. That's the "pre-heater on" symbol. If it goes right out, you'll need to replace the 4" sheetmetal "fuse" which is attached to the pre-heater solonoid on the right side of the engine (1/2" nuts). Warning - the fuse ends are sharp if it's been melted. They're a few bucks at Volvo. Get a spare for the glove compartment and keep it in an envelope.
IF you get the pre-heater to cycle and it still doesn't start, go in behind the driver's front tire to the side of the engine. The first thing you should find is the shut down solonoid. Make sure the key's on and get under there and give it a push to release it. If it's sticking, that should free it. Keep that thing lubed!
As a reminder, don't use starting fluid, etc. because of the preheater in the intake. Also, with the Kysor shut-down on that engine, it usually requires some air pressure to activate the fuel shut-off, so it won't be able to shut down until it builds up some air pressure. If you run into having to immediately shut it down, you "may" need to get underneath and pull on the little triangular fuel shut-down on the fuel pump.
The FE's are rock solid trucks if you maintain them. Good luck! -
i just bought 95 volvo fe42. I always have orange "zig-zag in a circle" light on. Do you know what is the problem and how can i fix it? Also do you know where can i get repair manual about my truck?

The light you describe is the engine intake air preheater. It should go off after a short period of time. There is a tin fuse on it (passenger side of engine) you should make sure that is intact.
I ordered a set of manuals for mine from the local volvo shop for around $100. -
i checked my air intake fuse and it seems ok. What alse can be the problem.
