They are looking at minimum age. Companies set their own minimum age requirement, it may be 21, 22,23,24,25. There is no upper age cutoff in trucking.

The main reason most companies (not just trucking companies) ask for a birthdate is for the background check. Any background check requires a birthdate in addition to all the other info to ensure that they are pulling the correct record, since so many people share the same names. It's just an extra piece of info to make sure they are right.

For trucking companies, they are also ensuring that you meet the minimum age requirement for their insurance company. 21 is the minimum to get a CDL, but some insurance companies require drivers to be anywhere from 21 to 25 years old.

And don't worry about being 50. We have many drivers who are over that. You'll go through an EXTENSIVE physical agility test (by extensive I mean it takes an entire day) to make sure you can do the job without injuring yourself. And TCD drivers have to take and pass the same test :)

by law they have to let you opt out. my problem is I am long term unemployed trying to get any local job. so ultimately I can get into trucking. i have spent 20 years in call center work. you would think would be no problem getting another. a company called me other day and seemed excited i was available but needed to do assessment. on assessment they asked your age range. i am 50 had to check 50 to 54. later that day they called me and said there was great response to their ad, so they were going in a different direction, today one of treir other offices called on their assessment i opted out age question. however they are looking up middleburg heights office assessment. so my guess i will not hear from them.

If you have a CDL, they know you're at least 21.

Insurance companies run the trucking industry and they can pretty much dictate whatever they want as far a minimum age, but they can't require a maximum. Also, and employer cannot turn you down because of your age unless your age directly affects whether or not you can perform that job.

But good luck proving that's the reason someone turned you down.

Either the company has integrity or they don't. If they're the kind of company that will blow you off because of age, you probably don't want to run with them anyway. In the OTR biz there are simply too many opportunities to screw the driver, so if you can't/don't trust the company you're with, you're going to be better off without them.

Take a look at the Maverick recruitment stuff and their driver awards, and it would be hard to make a case that they are biased against older drivers. You get the sense that Maverick gets the old joke about the two bulls sitting at the top of the hill. The young one says to the old bull: "Hey, look down yonder at that bunch of heifers, why don't we run down there and get one." The old bull snorts and replies: "Son, let's walk down there and get 'em all."
