For those who would like to read how I've applied everyone's advice....

The following results in smooth acceleration for me using a Columbia with EF 10 spd, single bore stainless, 15% outage (give or take)...I primarily haul wax emulsion, which is notorious for whacking the sh## out of you.
Note: I do not use the clutch

For 1st thru 5th gear, accelerate normally shifting between 1300 and 1400 RPM
If you keep it smooth and rhythmic, you won't feel the bump
If you do feel the bump, shift immediately after and continue as stated above

For 6th and higher, gently release from the previous gear, shift into the next gear, then hold yor RPM until
you feel a slight bump, then accelerate steadily

Braking: Steadily apply brakes while gently increasing pressure, downshift only until after you can shift into next lowest gear at 1400 RPM or below. Do not pump brakes, or accelerate. A constant deceleration is the key to not getting the big shove into the car stopped at the light in front of you.

This will only work if you are maintaining a huge following distance (which you should). If you have to stop in a hurry, minimize downshifting and steadily hold the brakes. If you do this enough, you get to go buy new brakes.

Highway surge: If you are getting tugged forwards and back while negotiating traffic: coast, wait for the bump, then accelerate.

Again, the above is YOUR advice....and I thank you all for helping me smooth out the bump monster!!!!

Perfectly stated. This should be in the tanker yanker's handbook.

I'm glad it worked out for you and you aren't getting slammed anymore because that's no fun at all.

When I pulled tankers I timed my shifts with the surge. Never had any problems, except the time I accidently missed a gear and the surge hit so hard I smacked my face off of the steering wheel.:biggrin_2559: I waited until the surge would roll forward then shift up. You definitely are going to get bumped by certain loads. I hauled food grade stuff and always got bad surge with juice and citric acid and other light liquid stuff. Oil and chocolate and other thicker stuff wasn't so bad.

    Flatbedder73 Thanks this.

What about accelerating and braking to make the scales think you weigh less so you get the arrow for the bypass lane?...............

For years skilled tanker yankers would slide up to the toll booth getting on the PA tpk & would drop a weight class is the surge was right as the weighed in to get the toll ticket.

Don't work, they will pull you across.
They will make you sit till the surge stops. Best to just pull up smoothly. 90% of the time they will roll you across.

best and fastest way to stop the surge, release all brakes and let her move you a few times. This seems to take out all the energy in the wave.
Just don't do it at a red light with cars behind you....lol

I used to have to convince trainees that they COULD stop on a platform scale at the shipper or customer and leave the brakes off. some would stand along side the scale w/ the driver's door open until if stopped moving back N forth.
