First of all I want to say thank you for such a great site! and all the great advice.. :biggrin_25514:

Secondly I need some thoughts or advice...
I'm up here just north of Detroit.....yeah not a lot of regional/OTR terminals around here that I'm aware of....

So I just went to a private training school (160 hrs) and got my CDL-A. Working on Hazmat and doubles endorsement - should have it in ~2wks.
Although I'm single, I do have a daughter starting high school. So getting home once in a while is important to me.

I'm looking for a company to start with. I THINK i narrowed it down to either:
USA Trucking with orientation out of Dayton OH
Watkins Shepard with 10 day orientation and a yard here in Detroit (Taylor)
or Super Service out of Grand Rapids.

thoughts? opinions? other company's I should be looking at?
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

    DL.

I need help deciding what to do

    Check these :

    NTB
    Falcon Transport
    Corrigan
    Schneider (tanker division)
    Maverick

Watkins & Shepard has a good reputation.

Schneider is hiring from around Detroit and they are offering nice bonuses for tanker ($7500) and van ($5000). Training would be in Gary, IN

Convenience to home is probably a good way to put it.

Of course I want to make money and not deal (to much) with old broken down equipment. So a reputable company in other words, that i can stick with for more than a year at least.
I don't think I care if it's flatbed or refrigerated, etc.... that much.

    thanks again for the replies!

There are many decent companies out there that you can look into. Do you want OTR or regional. I'll list a few of the companies here that either 1. I like, or 2. I've heard good things about. Research some of them, and decide what's best for you. Hope this helps.

    Flatbed:
    TMC
    Maverick
    Melton
    Boyd Brothers

    Dry Van:
    Schneider
    Werner
    Millis Transfer
    Transport America
    Carter Express

    Reefer:
    Maverick
    Schneider
    Central Refrigerated

    Tanker:
Schneider is the only company I am personally aware of that will hire fresh CDL school graduates to drive tankers

There are of course many more companies than this, but like I said, these are just the ones I can think of that I can either personally recommend, or have been recommended to me by other drivers. Good luck with your search.

many companies once you go thru orientation
it doesn't matter where you live
Transam you take truck home anyway
    they run into Detroit everyday
so getting home wouldn't be the problem

Most companies I've talked to say I'd have my own truck that I'd just drive home. Unfortunately, I live in the 'suburbs' and you can't park a big rig in the neighborhood here at my house.
That's another reason I was looking for a company with a yard in the area, so I could park the truck there and take my car home.

Sorry, probably should have mentioned that as a factor in my original post.
