I also like to eat, every other day or so, anyway. And then I also started back in 1986 when things were a lot different, not necessarily better (although for sure more fun), and now know nothing else.
The very nature of the business is that is not "driver friendly">>away from home for a week, or more, at a time, or get a local job, and work 14+ hours a day.
Pays better than picking strawberries, though. -
Trucking is a profession where you just have to learn to let the every day irritants of the job roll off your back or it will eventually drive you nuts. The advice of others here to do what you can to find your niche in this industry is valid. Things continually are changing for us, and as uausl, we learn to adapt and move on. For me it's all about the freedom of the open highway, our beautiful country, and meeting new people and cultures within our borders. Yeah there are days when it's tough.....really tough, but then there are days when you just want to drive and drive. I love talking to and learning from the vast experience of other drivers out here on the road, learning from their mistakes and prospering from their wisdom. With only 12 years out here paying my dues, I've still got alot to learn......and for me, that's part of the excitement and enjoyment of being a professional driver.

If someone has a problem with every single company they work for, well, you might want to take a look at the common factor.
HotH2o Thanks this. -
Some drivers just have a run of bad luck with companies. I have to agree that a lot of companies do take advantage of their drivers. Between that and FMSCA laws that keep coming out, the industry is becoming almost unbearable. I have talked to countless drivers with a 30+ year record who said that they quit because they were tired of all the BS. One old driver (my uncle) told me that the government regulations and road side harassment from DOT have sucked the fun out of trucking. He further said that eventually it will get so bad that truckers will walk away from their trucks in protest. We'll see.

Trucking is definately not what it used to be; a bit of fun, cars waved at you instead of cutting you off, truckstops that were for truckers, reserved tables for truckers, comraddery and good money.

Every yr it's getting worse too.Driving trk is nothing more then a job.

I started in 1987, yes it was fun back then. Do you remember how you would get on the CB and talk to a total stranger driver and run with them all day or night? Stop and have coffee with them? Remeber the trucker-only truckstops with reserved tables for truckers? When cab-overs ruled the road and the money was good? When the Doswell All American was the only real truckstop around Richmand, Va.? When drivers would stop if you were broke-down? When everyone asked if you were ok on the side of the road? When drivers would actually get out and help you slide your tandems? When other drivers would buy you a coffee? When drivers would spend hours talking in the evening outside? When most drivers wore blue-jeans and cowboy boots and a cowboy hat? When kids would want you to honk your horn and cars actually waved and smiled at you? When you were proud to be a trucker? Gone forever are those days.Last edited by a moderator: Jun 30, 2013
