I work in a corporate finance job and have been looking into starting my own business for the last 2 years. My cousin recently suggested going into car transport with him. He has owned a body shop for over 10 years and knows the industry pretty well. We live in South Florida and have talked about doing transport up and down the east coast (Miami to New York). We have around $100k to spend on the business. I'd like to get people's thoughts on the best type of business to get into, ideal truck/trailer set-up and cost for the equipment. I know there are still a lot more details to cover, but much of that depends on the truck size and states covered. Thank you in advance for taking the time to point me in the right direction. I can also be contacted at [email protected]

Join OOIDA. Google for the website. It's a business organization for a single truck operation or small fleet operation. All your questions can be answered there.

$100K is a good start up and working capital but you are going to need some equipment and that going to take at least another $150k-$200k?

How should I put this, see customers and brokers don't always pay on time and often don't pay at all. If they can't pay you or simply don't want to pay you they simply use another carrier. It will take some trail and error to figure out who you can and can not trust in the industry.

I'm not in auto carrier business, I'm in the food grade tanker business 2nd generation and still have a lot of issues with this problem.

That's something to chew on for now. Good luck.
