Does anyone know the minimum length a belly dump trailer needs to be in Texas? I've heard the DOT will pull over trailers that are not 38' long. I wonder if the bridge link isn't long enough on a shorter trailer if an over weight permit is allowable. I'm looking at an old 28' belly dump that the owner claims he pulled 24 tons without problems but then again, maybe he's just trying to make the sell.

you'd probably have to call texas dot to find out those answers for sure.

the overweight is usually to just haul over 80 thousand. once you find your truck and trailer. measure the bridge. then look at the atlas. you'll have an idea what you can legally haul bridgewise. but , hopefully a texas permit has a clearer ruling for there state. specially for what your running.

only overweight i had with a weight listing was oregon. but there weights are lower then the national numbers the atlas has listed for the rest of the country.

if you don't have an atlas. then measure the bridge and post the number along with the axle groups and i'm sure someone will look them up and post on here for you.

    Weight
The basis for maximum legal weight is the number of axles. This information, in conjunction with thePermissible Weight Table, is used to determine maximum legal weight for a vehicle. The following terms are used in relation to weight:

    • drive axles - the axles which power a vehicle
    • inner bridge distance - the distance from the center of the first drive axle to the center of the last trailer axle
    • outer bridge distance - distance from the center of the steering axle of the truck to the center of the last trailer axle
    • steering axle - the front axle of the truck (legal weight and permitted weight are the same on steering axles)
    • tandem axle weight - total weight transmitted to the road by two or more consecutive axles whose centers may be included between two parallel transverse vertical planes spaced more than 40" and not more than 96" apart, across the full width of the vehicle.
    • Maximum legal gross weight cannot exceed 80,000 pounds.
    • Maximum legal weight for a single axle cannot exceed 20,000 pounds.
    • Maximum legal weight for a tandem axle group cannot exceed 34,000 pounds.
    • Tires may not carry a weight greater than the weight specified and marked on the sidewall of the tire.

Since it is an older belly dump at only 28 ft. and if it is steel it is going to be heavy. Not knowing the weight of the tractor your tare weight will probably be heavy. Most pits in Texas will let you go out with 84,000 lbs. as long as you have an overweight permit but that does not always mean you can legal it.

you have to be 51 ft over all to scale 80,000 http://txdmv.gov/motor-carriers/ove...ght-limits/item/2123-permissible-weight-table . They do have a annual over axle over weight permit that lets us go up to 84,000 that is what ever your steer tires are rated for and 37,500 on truck tandems and trailer tandems but it is per county issues you can figure out what counties you run in a nd only buy them but go ahead and get the 20 counties it will cost the same if you only do 1 or 10 counties . 1st time you apply you have to get your insurance compony to get some one to issue you a bond in the amount of I think it was either $10,000 or $15,000 .
