Can anyone tell me what the average pay might be for a company driver hauling hogs regionally. Figured this might be a question for drivers either in the southeast or Iowa region might have a answer for. I'm thinking of driving for a local company hauling hogs but don't want to be under paid. So would like to get a idea before they tell me what they pay so I know if they are low balling. Thanks "HARLEYPIRATE"

    They won't squeal on you!

I can tell you about dead pigs. The live ones I'm not so sure. It would have to be in the high .30's before I thought about it. There's a lot of responsibility getting them to market. The one that lives in the brick house is an ###. :biggrin_2559:

Probably in all honesty be much better off on percentage--unless there is some very good stop pay--or you are hauling for a large farm--that you do one pick at--but most guys I know that do it--usually have 1/2dozen picks before they are loaded....
Also as an aside(and nothing personal--jus wonderin)have you been around LIVE animals much? haulin a rack aint for everybody--most I know grew up on or around a farm and are very comfortable around animals--so just wondering...........

We rarely have to hit more than one barn for a load. More later. Busy

Yes I've grown up on a farm where all we have ever had were hogs. I hauled cattle for a number of years along with hogs. I know the job as a OTR driver. I'm just trying to figure out if doing a "local" job is worth the pay or not. I'm not getting rich on the road as any trucker knows however I'm not starving and I don't want to get to that point. So it not experience I'm wondering about, I'm wondering if anyone does it as a local job too that would give their experiences in pay.

Not sure how local you are thinking, but up here in NW Iowa local is generally considered upto six hours away from barn to market. Most of the hog hauler company drivers up here are paid on percentage, empty to loaded miles is always close to 40-50%. I believe most companies are paying between 25-30% of the load, some will deduct fuel surcharge and washouts out of the load before paying the driver, others won't. Rates up here run anywhere from $3-$4 a mile, $3.25 probably being an average. So you would be looking at .41-.49cpm as a company driver. Based off of full rate.

These guys up here normally run their ### off, and get little to no sleep. But things have been a little slower than normal as the hog numbers are down right now. Hope this helps.

Oscar this is a huge help and I thank you for this information. Yeah this company said the run 3 states and the drivers get home every night and off on the weekends. I appreciate the info on the % pay an ill see if they get close to that to know whether they are in the ball park. Yeah the 3.25 is about normal. But knowing what they should be getting paid and knowing they have there own wash rack in the back to wash out the pots at no outside costs to them or the drivers I just didn't wan them to be paying low to mid 30 cent a mile. Then I know they wouldn't be paying too well.
