Am I foolish to give up a high paying local job and move to Portland?

    Started driving for a local grocery warehouse when I turned 21, and now seven years later I'm thinking about trying a new job in Portland. The thing is that I know how brutal it can be to lose seniority and a decent wage (60K to drive around SE WI and N Illinois). So here is the question: Would an 18 credit certificate in Transport Trailer Service at a state tech school along with my 7 years of day cab driving be sufficient in finding a decent driving job in Portland? Apparently it's very hard to find work in that city, what with the constant stream of transplants looking to start a new life.

    Did anyone take a 3-4 week vacation for the sole purpose of finding a job, the point here being that if you couldn't find one, then you'd just return back home.

    There are 14 states with cities named Portland: Maine, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, North Dakota, Indiana, Connecticut, Michigan, Arkansas, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, and Kentucky.

    Haha. Portland, Oregon. I guess what I'm asking is the logistics of finding a driving job outside of your state in a span of 3 weeks.

    I would suggest you follow your own advice... take a vacation and use it to see if you can 'improve' on your situation. Whatever you do, take anything said with a grain of salt (everyone who's looking for drivers or anyone else, for that matter, is lying to you).

    Consider what you have going for you. If you already have established seniority (I'm guessing you must be in a union job cause that's the only way seniority means squat), it may be wiser to stick to where you are and improve 'within the ranks'.

    Just my thoughts.

    OK, Portland, Oregon. Nice state. You can find a good job there within 24 hours. Here is just one website to look at for that area : trans-system

    Also, look at Careerbuilder website. You will have to sift through the jobs on this website though, lots of ads for the mega-carrier low paying jobs.
