Odessa/Midland

Saw an ad that FFE is hiring for tanker oilfied work in Midland. Don't know any more than that about it.

 

Everything I hear about housing in Midland/Odessa is tough...really expensive. Motels are gonna be $100/night. At least that's what I saw advertised along the interstate. I would suggest doing some homework and getting a plan of some kind together before just heading out.

Just my opinion, but why not go to San Antonio area first? Your likely to find a lot of the same jobs and same companies...and chances of finding a place to stay might be better.

 

If you go west try sanjel again out there as well as frac tech,ast, ultra tech,Pumpco, weatherford, trican and probably a few others. If you just got your license then frac will be your best opportunity to make good money. I would also look into coil tubing and wireline and maybe cement if I were you.

 

You will get hired in west Texas. Finding housing requires patience but it can be done. My complex in Midland has a few one bedrooms available for about $1100 per month. One bedrooms are easier to find than 2 or 3. You will also find travel trailers for rent if you want to pay less. Plan on it taking a few weeks to secure housing. If you're lucky , maybe less.

 

The op did say he would be willing to live out of his car for a while. Can I hear if this is realistically doable in that area of Texas, or living in a tent? All heat, few trees and not much shade makes me wonder how livable it would be. I live in a tent now and it's okay for me even though I have the option to sleep on the floor of an air conditioned bunkhouse so I can handle primitive conditions even though I don't need to.

Although I'm 1 month into my new life as a Vacuum truck driver in S. Texas I still think about getting into Fracing because of the income potential and career advancement. I was originally planning to go to Mid./Odessa to find a job there and live in a van for a period of months, but got hired on within minutes of walking in the door at my new company in Kenedy, so I never made it out West. But the thoughts of doing it are still there.

I am going to odessa as soon as I can get everything taken care of here in East Texas. I saw that there was an rv site that rented tent spots for $25 a night. I will be doing that or sleeping in my car until I find something. I read on another forum where a person slept in his car for 5 weeks in Odessa. He parked at truck stops and hotels. He said you could take a shower at the truck stops for $3. It would be hot in the tent I think for another month.

 

The truckstop showers will be more like $12. You might find a state park with showers that allow tent camping?

 

$12 dollars seems high but I will need one in that heat. The state park is about 40 miles away. I am trying to set up some temporary jobs when I get the to make it easier and hopefully make some connections for jobs.

 

$12 to $15 is the going rate today. Or if your are smart, you get a shower credit from one of the local drivers that fuel at the truckstop, who never uses the shower.
