I have a maltese and they do not shed, neither do poodles. That is one reason people with allergies are directed to these breeds. Now of course they might leave a hair or two around every now and then but for the most part they do not shed. I have had my maltese dog for 3 years and my parents have had a shih tzu for the same amount of time and neither of us have ever found any hairs around. I am normally allergic to dogs but have not had one problem.
Dogs That Don't Shed - Some General Points
List Of Popular Dogs That Don't Shed
- Generally speaking, dogs that don't shed are the best option for allergy sufferers. Non shedding breeds are considered to be hypoallergenic which means they don't produce as many allergens through flaky dead skin and dander, which is what triggers the allergies.
- Another general rule to follow when looking for a dog that doesn't shed is to go for a single coated breed (you'll find plenty in the list below). This is a more important factor than the length of the coat - short haired, long haired and wire haired.
- If you do have your heart set on a dog that does shed there are some things you can do to manage the shedding. Regular brushing is the key - the hair will end up in your brush rather than in the carpet and on the furniture. You can also buy some shed control products which help minimize the shedding - 8 in 1 Pro Pet Salon Shed Control Shampoo (8 oz.; Fresh Berry)
Below you will find a great selection of non shedding dog breeeds. For further information regarding each breed (size, temperament, trainability etc..) please click through to the American Kennel Club website.

Speaking from personal experience, my husband and I have had a dog (a jack) on the truck for 6 years, and it is much more cruel to leave him at home. When we were changing companies and couldn't take him to orientation but could have him after we were assigned a truck, we left him at the in-laws. All he did for a week was lay on my jacket (also known as his blanket). The in laws couldn't get him to eat, and he would only go outside to go to the bathroom.
If you have a pet, and actually care about that pet and have a bond to them, it is akin to abandonment when you leave them by themselves, even in the familiar environment of home. In actuality, our dog barks at the same things in the truck and at home: strangers walking by, unusual sounds. They also get the same exercise they would at home. He lays around at home and plays outside. On the truck he gets out more than at home.
As far as shedding and smell, not a problem if you actually clean the truck and the pet.
Pets on trucks are not for some because they are too lazy to care for the pet.
I recommend having a pet if you have the time and initiative to properly care for them.
They are great for companionship and sanity.

That is just too cute!!!!
And I agree with you 100% on the abandonment thing. I am sick to death about having to leave our dog at home while we are gone to school and then while we are in orientation at training. We will be in school for 5 weeks then come home for 2 days then we will be gone again for at least another 5 weeks. Right now we live with my in-laws and they are going to take care of Hamlet while we are gone. I am glad he at least gets to stay in familiar territory. But I know when we left him with my parents for a week when we went to Las Vegas to get married, he would hardly eat and didn't sleep much. My mom said he just kept looking out the window and going to the door all the time checking to see if we were there. She said it broke her heart. I just pray that he will be alright while we are gone. -
Thanks, GT. I really had no choice. The 'dog warden' or whatever they called him was a complete idiot to me on the phone, so hey, why not adopt a dog before you even see it?
Funny thing was, I had never bothered reading the pets section in the classified ads until that afternoon. Even stranger was that I drove to the town's dog pound (cages and dog houses were outside,) and 'Sara' came running over like she knew me.
As far as the ten days, that was back in 1991, not sure how it works in that town now. Mercifully, I don't live in that part of Massachusetts anymore. -
I have a mini schnauzer and would recommend this breed a lot. This breed doesn't shed and my dog's eyesight is better than the min poodle I had before. He can actually track things out of the window that I point him toward, and he can see to quite a distance birds, airplanes, etc. Sometimes he even watches TV. At 22lbs he's fairly husky and durable too. He does require periodic clips, but his hair is cut short and doesn't often get into a mess. He loves to fetch a ball and is easily trained, though not for "party tricks" as easily as my mini poodle was.

I think having a dog along is wonderful. i guess most companies, ask for a deposit, figuring the dog might just mess up the truck.
-
Many companies that allow pets do require a deposit, some of those companies the deposit is none refundable. Usually the deposit is based on the size of the pet. Unfortunately, they have to because somewhere down the line some crackerhead didn't take care of the pet properly.

Globetrotter, you have given me some hope. My dog is a boxer too, and I would REALLY love to be able to keep him! Which company do you work for? Do you know which companies would allow me to take my pal along? It would be so great!
-
