Small fellow and good shape here as well and it took a few loads to get it right. First load I had a cape flapping in the wind once I hit the interstate. Tho I do have to say, every load I still find something new that I didn't know (or think of) before.

It took me foreeeever ! First and second load my God....they were both high loads no chains tho but corner protectors and 8 ' heavy drop tarps one had no safety nothing the other one full safety harness the works I could barely move...ended up unrolling my tarps the wrong way 110 degrees my God! But its a great workout.

One thing that really amazed me about flatbedding is the comradery that you will find. I remember my third or so load I was having some trouble and 2 other drivers came over and gave me a hand, taught me a few tricks and went on their ways. I never saw that when doing vans, so that was a huge plus for me. Just take your time and when you think you got enough straps/chains, add another.

We experienced that today. ..trainer and I with another major carrier

Yup, happens all the time. Just remember to pay it back down the road when you can.
BTW, US Army = Thanks for your service!retired_2009 and okiedokie Thank this. -
I think it took me a few weeks to get quicker and faster at it. You'll learn from your mistakes quickly and others will teach you some tricks at making it better and easier. I too have seen how flat-bedders help each other. Vans there isn't much to them so I can't see anyone helping you out, except for tight turns or areas. Flat-bedders also know its not just holding a steering wheel, that it takes some hard work in harsh conditions at times. I helped others thinking how much I appreciated it, especially in harsh conditions. As others have said, pay it forward.
With that said, while I miss my time at TMC and the trucks, I don't miss messing with tarps, chains and high loads. I'm a local flatbedder now and only have to deal with straps and palletized loads, but have to drive a Freight Shaker, well at least its a new one.
