Well, I've gotten the green light from Schneider to "continue the application process". Monday I'm starting a refresher course at a local community college. I've been approved for an OTR position after I'm done with the refresher, but there are also regional openings, and an opening for Walmart dedicated. I really just want to make the right decision here. Would I be crazy for going OTR rather than Walmart or regional?

I worked a Wal-Mart dedicated for 2 years, got tons of miles but you do see the same places over and over. Depends on what you are putting your priorities on. If you want hometime take the dedicated route, if you want to see the country go OTR, Wal-Mart is about half of a regional area I would say.

Thanks for the advice. Such a hard decision. I think seeing the country would be awesome, the schedule seems really rough though.. Did you give up dedicated for OTR?

If it was going Company Driver, I'd get on the Walmart Dedicated Account. :biggrin_255:

You definitely run hard, but I felt that was a good thing. You get some reefer experience with wal-mart too which could be a resumè builder for you. I gave it up to start a local dump truck biz. Even in a region where you're somewhat familiar with you'll see a lot of new things, wal-marts are everywhere! If you like predictability go dedicated, if you want a new adventure all the time go otr.

It really depends on what part of the country you live in.. I'm on the wm account and I like it..for the most part..I also rab otr for awhile.. it was fine too but the $$ and home time is better on the wm acct.

Only you can answer that.Do you want reg or deicated an be home more, know about what your checks will be every week, know your route.Or do you want OTR, check varies, never know where you're going next, home once a month if that sometimes. But with dedicated and regional that can get boring after time.I imagine you can change lanes if you prefer.

Thanks for the help guys. Really think I'm leaning towards the adventure aspect of OTR. That's a good point patty.... I could try one for a while, then maybe switch if I wasn't happy. Will I really be home only once a month? I thought they were advertising two weeks out and two days home... Do they have a system where you earn days off like other companies I've read about?

I'd be on a Virginia account. Would that be a good one you think?

With OTR their website says you can be home every 14 days but don't count on it.They have to glamour up their ads otherwise noone will drive for them. The standard hometime is once a month as long as you give them a 2 weeks notice an remind your dispatcher often and your home 1 day for every week out.You really have to mind not staying out to make OTR work.
