Pulled out in my run the other day and everything was fine. Got off the interstate to a red light, turned green and made my rt hand turn.....wouldn't shift out of 2nd!! Buzzers and lights going crazy on the transmission panel, wtf?!?! So, before I made the call for the tow truck I checked the faults and it said total distance couldn't be calculated and road speed error. What to do? I opened my battery compartment and pulled every fuse I could find, let it sit for about a minute. Plugged everything back in and has been running fine since. Moral of the story, don't spend big bucks right off. Try the little things first. Sometimes computers glitch for no reason and just need a reset.

actually that little glitch is often letting you know something is wrong, that's when you find out and fix the problem before something major goes, resetting the computer doesn't fix the problem. ... often just lets more damage be done.

You are right, sometimes it is. I just can't see paying big money until the fault starts to repeat itself

Codes are stored in the computer. Old ones will come up when scanned.

Again, correct. They are stored in the order of newest event first. But the point I am trying to make is the fact that not all incidents warrant a tow bill and $120/hr labor and diagnostic charge when, in fact, there is no problem at all, just a hiccup. If it happens again, there is a record of the first fault along with what ever is happening at the time. Then the ECM has a story to tell that will lead the tech down a path instead of just scratching his or her head.

No mention in your post of what your driving. I'm assuming your truck has an I-Shift from your post. Correct?

As mentioned, A fix like that will get you home, but you shouldn't ignore it.

that trans has a "limp mode". When anything major fails (or a bad sensor says it failed) it jumps into second and stays there to at least get you off the highway. The theory is that if you can only stay in one gear, 1st is to slow and you can probaly still get going in second. So, if any major sensor fails it goes into limp mode and refused to go out of second. (for fear that it might not be able to get in another gear properly.)

Any number of sensors can cause limp mode. High trans temp could be causing it, or even something as serious as the linkages missing the shifts. If it tried to get in a gear and cant for some reason, it goes into limp mode. Somthing it telling the trans computer it's broken and shouldn't play around. (it think if it keeps trying to shift it will get you stuck) Resetting everything makes the computer temporarily forget why it went into limp mode, but the cause may be still there.
