Texas law to register trailers worries truckers

AUSTIN -- Raul Garcia says trucking companies are losing money because of confusion over a new law requiring that commercial truck trailers be registered in the state of Texas.
"We're already living the consequences," said Garcia, Mesilla Valley Transportation vice president of risk and safety.
The law, which state Rep. Joe Pickett, D-El Paso, wrote and legislators approved this year, was intended to require Mexican commercial truck trailers that operate inside the border commercial zone be registered either in Texas or Mexico.
It wasn't intended to impede trailers with valid registrations in other states, Pickett said. But when the Texas Department of Public Safety began issuing warnings for those kinds of trailers, some trucking companies worried that the measure could hurt border business.
"We don't want to stop commerce," Pickett said. He said he planned to ask the Texas attorney general to rule on how the law should be implemented. Until the law is clarified, he said, he would ask the Department of Public Safety to delay enforcement.

Why does that not suprise me that the law was written so poorly.

Well Texas does have a lot of trucks running Okl.tags on the trailer that never leave the state.Thats a lot of money leaving the state.But Texas should let you register with non exspire trailer tags.
