I am currently studying the Florida CDL-A Handbook to get my CDL Permit. I know you have to have a medical card in order to obtain a CDL. My question is will I need a medical card just to obtain the CDL Permit? I know it differs state to state so I'm asking Florida CDL Holders.
Thanks,
TJ

Yes. You will need to obtain your Medical PRIOR to taking your CDL-A State of Florida exam. Most walk-in-clinics that handle pre-employment or worker's comp will give you a Class-A CDL physical. Costs vary a bit, but the exam for Florida is pretty straight-forward. Main issues: Heart, Blood Pressure, Seizures, Drugs/Alcohol use, Balance issues (inner-ear), and Vision/Hearing, Hernias, can all be disqualifying depending on history and/or correction. Very few drivers I've know in the business have failed their physicals. Those who do mostly have hidden issues or do to developing issues once on the job. You should be fine.

Thanks y'all! I appreciate your answers. That'll be one thing I need to add to by checklist.

Those that have not done so, you need to file a copy of your medical card also. Can be scanned in online..

Not what he asked and both answers given here are wrong. He asked about the PERMIT test. You take the permit test at the DMV and NO, you do NOT need a medical exam to take and obtain the permit. Don't know why these guys told you otherwise.
BAD RESPONSE STEEL: This paragraph is from the FDOT pre-exam text regarding CDL permiting:
The applicant will be required to provide their current Drivers License, a Department of Transportation Physical Examination Form, and their social security card. There is no cost for this permit and the applicant can pick up a copy of the Florida CDL Manual free of charge to study in preparation for the test. In addition to the CDL manual, there are many online practice tests for the Florida CDL permit. eGears offers an online CDL test with sample questions and answers that are on the actual CDL exam to help improve an applicant's chances of passing on the first try. -

900,000-tons-of-steel is correct. You do not need to show proof of medical certification to take the general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles tests to get your permit. You will need to have the medical cert before driving though, even to practice. That is your responsibility. Most schools will require you to have it before beginning training. Unless you fall into an exempt category you will be required to show the medical cert when you actually get your CDL from the tax collector office. They will scan it into the system for you.
How do I know? I just went through the process in May.900,000-tons-of-steel Thanks this.
