What are your short term goals and your long term goals. Do you want to drive van, reefer, or flat bed. Is your long term goal to become an O/O. Do you want to drive OTR, regional or dedicated. You have the GI Bill, you may want to use it to increase your first years income through an apprenticeship.... being in the military you have heard this a thousand times..... Fail to plan, plan to fail.

Since you know you want to be a truck driver (it is in your blood) you should already be applying for your TWIC card and passport. You should be applying for all the truck stop rewards cards, Pilot/Flying J, Loves, etc.. You should be saving your leave, so you can go to school while you are on TERMINAL LEAVE. Ninety days of terminal leave will get you though the company school and the 4-5 weeks of on the road training with a trainer (or even a community college driver training course). Start studying now for the written test, you will at least want to get the Hazmat and tanker endorsements. The hazmat and tanker endorsements are just written test (no hands on testing)

Unfortunately, new drivers are the first to get their miles cut (less money), when things are slow. The companies are going to give the miles to the drivers that have proven themselves to the company. This happens to a lot of the newbies. Having the extra monthly money from an apprenticeship can make a big difference on whether or not you successfully make it through the roughest part of starting a career as a truck driver.

You say you are a hundred percent sure you want to be a truck driver.... then find a company that has an apprenticeship. [FONT=&quot]Entry-level truck driving jobs can be rough. It’s best to have realistic expectations and understand it’s just one year of your life and after that, things do get better. Once you get that first year behind you then you can figure out which priorities matter the most to you: more miles, better pay, more home time, newer truck, more interesting loads or even becoming an owner operator.

GIVE YOURSELF EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

Roehl has a two year va apprientanship program for use with your post911 gi bill. They seem to have good training plan and is approved by the va and DOL . I am scheduled to starting Gary Indiana aug 5 after retiring from the us army . The best of luck to you. If you want more info just google "roehl honor program "

I was going to ask that myself. I was in Kandahar in 2004-2005 (wow, can't believe it has been almost 10 years). I am retired now, I did 10 years in the Army and 10 years in the Navy. I was over there with the Navy. (I also did 3- 6 month tours in Iraq)

Mastrassasin, I live in Eau Claire, I would be more than happy to run over to the DMV and get you any study materials you may need and send it to you over there. Just let me know.

    Thanks for serving.
