Cause about a few posts AFTER that one...Chuckie86 posted this:
"Well as far as putting straps 12 ft apart I wouldn't do that I know the have to be no more than 10ft apart example I'm hauling 2 booms for an excavator so I have 4 prices 2 are 20ft so I used 5 straps because they are side by side the other 2 pieces are 13 ft so I used 4 straps I know that's a little more than I needed but its what I felt was safe"

All you need to know regarding securement regs can be found here.
To wit:
Now, while you are correct that it does not say that all tie downs must be within 10 feet of the next one and, therefore, you COULD simply place all the tiedowns within the first 10' of the load and still be legal, at least by these regs, it doesn't make much sense to do it that way now does it? I doubt DOT would give you any flak if you fudged a foot here or there for ease of access, to prevent damage to the load or its securement, or for other valid reasons.
Edit: Just read another of their documents for further securement training here. This is what they wrote:

You can always add extra straps just for looks, and just snug them on there so the 'man' stays off your back.
