How much does everybody else with hold per mile for the oh shoot fund? I've got my trucks set at .10/mile for pm (little high) and .15/mile for the overhauls, on the motor trans and rears or any other oh shoot repairs.. Is that reasonable should it be more or less? Thank you.

    Jrdude5 Thanks this.

Depends on various factors ... Lanes , freight , miles ... .10 per mile is like 1000 bucks if you do 10k per month... And oh shoot generally means your truck breaks down in no mans land ... So i would say it all depends

Lol when it breaks down in no mans land Its not oh shoot its now what the #### am I gonna so. Lol. The maintain ace is based on 3000/week average. With payments, wages etc and everything taken out leaves about $600/week that hasn't been used that goes into savings. $1200/month is a lot for just maintenance. Wanted to know if that should maybe be cut down a little and added in someplace else. .15/mile for the overhaul fund I'm iffy about with 700k on one truck and 1.4 mil on the other. Almost wondering if cutting down to about .05/mile would be better for the P.M and moving the other .05/mile over to that fund to build that up a little sooner. Both samples keep coming back clean but the 06 is showing more lead than I would like to see. Starting to think rods and mains are in order. Nickel copper etc are all normal. I'm just trying to figure out what to withhold and where to put it so its set up and I'm not caught between a rock and a hard place.

The other truck runs cheaper by about .25cpm but seems like there's more to that one than what oil samples are showing. They're all over the map. Last one came back Nickel was a little high and lead was low. This current sample lead was high copper was high nickel was normal. Starting to think the guys taking the oil sample are messing something up.

I would cut the pm fund in half, and apply that to the overhaul/replace fund.

I put12 cpm to maint and equal to 25% of that addition for "incidental" maint items like wipers and lights.

Give me a few years to get them both straightened out and the kinks worked out and you can have good old unit number 2 after I've dumped about 30k into that one to get it road worthly but she'd be a money maker.

I wouldn't go that far it'd be nice to have a company driver. I've got an even number of trucks and numerous people have told me it doesn't work like that you need an odd number. I'm starting to figure that out. Will I ever give my old rattle trap away nope. But I wouldn't mind having a 3rd and throwing a driver in it someday. That's a long way off though.

I'll take your advise on cutting the pm withholding back and throwing that into an overhaul fund. I think cutting it back to .05/mile with what we pay for services on our trucks should still be enough with holding at the end of the month for some other minor fixes that may pop up during the week.

Also would you advise possibly making 3 maintaince accounts? One for pm's one for light work such as air bags, brake cans, etc. and one for the overhaul? I've honestly considered stocking parts for our trucks back at the office just due to the fact that my shop can get everything for our trucks within a day or 2 but they have to mark them up to make money, have no problem with that, but they also allow me to supply the parts. Throw .05/mile in that fund and start stocking the small things like airbags, brake cans, and shoes just in case, as well as oil, fuel filters, etc to cut out labor. Does that sound like a decent Idea or would you just say screw it and put the other half into the overhaul fund?

I put 20cpm away for maintenance and repairs. Some months it doesn't get spent and other months it does. Put away as much as you can until you have enough to cover an engine overhaul. That's about the most expensive thing you could have to cover. Once you have that 25k put aside then you could start to put a little less aside for the breakdown fund.
