Which is why I use more chains t han necessary. Most people use the "half of the working load limit" amount, so they'll throw 1 for every 10k or so. Nope. I can do it pretty quickly, and I'll throw 1 for every 4-5k. Takes a litle longer, hut not that much longer....

IMHO-this happens much to often--and some parts of the country have more problems than others--and I know the DOT and some states have tried some standard knee jerk reactions--but here is MY question to all yall that do this--Are there any standard procedures involved at the mills themselves--I know this is a bad comparison--but when loading a van etc at many facilities they are anal about securement--loadlocks airbags whatever. I have a couple of good friends that do some very hazardous tank work also. They tell me at many of these chemical plants(beside their own massive training)there is a SAFETY supervisor of some sort--iverseing loading/unloading etc.
SO how does it work at a mill(fyi:Ive pretty much hauled a reefer my whole life--so really do not know)..Is loading/securement checked or supervised? And if not wouldn't an easy solution be first some standards for how to secure this type of load and some type of sfaety check to make sure it is done properly before a load can leave?
Now I know all the company answers why not--liability/time/cost etc......BUT--seems to me this would be an easy fix--besides another pair of eyes can't hurt right?

That was the second coil mishap last week in Houston.

That would effectively set the mill up to assume much of the liability risk and they would not want to do that. As I said before, even doubling the "safe" chain number on a large coil aren't going to keep that coil on the deck behind a bad driver who does something stupid.

true but you have to agree if the driver spends the extra time to double up the chainz he is probably less likely to drive like a moron

Like the load I have on now. It's a 77k forklift.
This thing is about as old as I am and no brakes. I got all the wheels chocked, plus 14 1/2" chains and 2 3/8" chains on this thing.
Tried to up load pic, but the system says file to big.. New one on me -
Too dang many chains!

I agree DO NOT HAUL COILS!!!!!!!! They are dangerous and difficult to properly secure....and oh my if they are over 6ft ....watch out now they are top heavy
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
(leaves more work for me)

Upload it to imageshack or some other file sharing site then put it on here. Thats how I solve that particular "file"is too big problem. The other is left up to your imagination.
