My wife and I have recently become otr truck drivers. We are currently in training and would like to know which mobile internet service provider we should get. We currently have Metro PCS for our smart phones which was fine as long as we stayed in Jacksonville FL but is completely inadequate in cross country applications. Not so much a problem with talk and text, but the mobile internet drops to 1x on the phone outside major cities (and even IN some major cities. Chicago IL, for example, may as well be Menomonie WI as far as Metro PCS internet is concerned). 1x, I have been told, isn't even 3g ( I have an internet clocking app on my phone and apparently 1x is actually 1g. Very slow indeed). My trainer has Verizon, which he tells me he never has a problem with an internet connection. In fact, he says that he pretty much can rely on a 4 g connection wherever he is. The problem is, although I have used Verizon's services in the past and have found them not only very reliable and good with customer service, they are ridiculously expensive. Especially since they do not offer unlimited data. I was wondering if anyone could give some feedback on the other major service providers as to their mobile internet reliability, talk and text reliability, cost, whether data is unlimited, whether I will have to sign a contract (I hate those), etc... As we are going to be team drivers, I am particularly interested in feedback relating to internet reliability while the truck is moving. I figure we are going to need high speed internet that will be able to stream video such as Netflix. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Doug

we have had Verizon for 9 years otr and have been very happy with it

Yep, Verizon is expensive.
I tried out Sprint for a week or two, before I went back to Verizon.
In that time I was roaming more than 65% of the time.
I saw 4g twice. And generally called to complain about slow data speed, every other day.
I am Grandfathered on the unlimited Plan, and they even gave it back to me when I reinstated my contract. -

I have Verizon, its very reliable. 60 a month 5g. what you need to ask your self what are you going to use it for? the truck stops have wireless for about 29.00 a month. I tried att about 4yrs ago and hatted them. they may have improved, anything you do go on ebay and buy your card so you don't have a contract. a 3g card is about 40.. that's what I use and it works for me.

The next Best would probably be sprint their network Isn't as big as verizon but its getting better and if you want to go purely data you can pick up a virgin mobile hotspot which will be ran off the sprint network and will have access to the 4G LTE network where available.
If you do decide to go with sprint they are the only carrier to still offer TRUE UNLIMITED data others claim to have this but throttle you after you reach a cap
Last but not least ATT and Tmobile both networks are similar in the fact that GSM cell service plain sucks -
I use Internet On The Go from Walmart which is ok coverage from the Midwest to the East Coast. It's 4.99 plus 3.9 cents per MB. Not cheap I guess.
I'm not a big Internet user, only to pay bills, transmit papers, check weather, mapquest. It's a Wifi hotspot so I canceled my Sprint account and went with Straight Talk Wireless $45/unlimited.
Internet on the Go and Straight Talk cover all my needs. -
sprint still has unlimited?
