Taxidriver is right but has not been here for a while. I don't disagree w/ anything she's ever wrote on here. I am still doing interstate (out 14 days) for OIX- now ORTRAN. It is forced dispatch but my boss will try to get someone somewhere they want to go, if OIX goes there, when they are in the right place at a time that he can do it. Like most people, I would prefer the paper log but other than that it's the best of the total of 7 OTR companies I've worked for (counting OIX). About the only thing they demand is on-time p/u and delivery or calling/messaging ASAP if something will prevent being on time. I did 2 Maine, some Mass (not Boston), a couple CT, and PA last Winter but the places were no problem. Now the only N.E. I get is PA. I believe we don't do NYC. I haven't done NYC and other guys say they wouldn't go. We leave KC or home and stay out 14 days then take 3 or 4 days off. Some people stay out longer because they want to do so. At least 1 guy is homeless except for his truck. There are only 2 teams. My experience is that one could make more money SOMETIMES if they stayed out longer than 14 days but it would take good communication w/ their boss to make that extra money because sometimes they plan 2 or 3 days in advance and all Sat/Sun work is planned by Fri night. All trucks are T660 midroof single bunk unless 2 teams have double bunks. Fridge is built-in w/ small freezer. No APUs so we idle for air, use Espar in winter, built-in inverter, idle-air paid by co. in few places that have it, and motel now if no idle-air for a 34 hour or more break. Layover is $150 and is very rare but I got it July 4. Some people say they don't get enough miles but for 6 months I've been satisfied almost every week and I don't always get to receivers as soon as possible so I may have missed out on getting the maximum possible mileage.

 

One thing people should know. The last thing recruiting told me, maybe 3 weeks ago, was that hiring was only KC area, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and Houston but they added that it can change.

 

Thanks dryman, for the update. If only their trucks were not so small.... I can only imagine, mid roof, one bed only, which means no top bunk to use as shelf, a refrigerator that takes space of storage... it seems there's very limited, almost no storage space in their trucks... For one who carries food, stove, clothes, paperwork, tools, parts, chains, cookware, etc, etc... there's no storage room in those trucks... Everything else sounds ok... that is, if one can stay more than just 14 days on the road...

 

You're welcome. 14 days works well for me with 4 days off usually. They are glad to have people stay out longer than 14 days, like almost all companies. Be sure to look inside one of the trucks if you haven't yet. I may not carry as much as I used to in the 90s and didn't carry chains at all last winter, but I have all the storage I need for 2-3 weeks. I believe the Century I had before this 660 had more storage and it had the 2nd bunk but I didn't use the bunk for storage. I did see a plywood sheet used to replace the 2nd bunk mattress for much more storage in a Century. It seems like plenty of room and storage, for a mid-roof. There is a fair amount of under-bunk storage as well as the 2 side boxes. I carry a tool box and other things along w/ straps in 1 box and food and drinks in the other side box as well as inside. I'd hate to do without the fridge after having 1. I carry no tv, stove, cookware or microwave and few parts but several gallon jugs of coolant, oil, and icemelt/abrasive. I still have room for a TV or microwave, not both. I'd agree probably not enough storage for people staying out more than 3 weeks unless they only carry a little more than me and replenish supplies every 2 weeks. Another extra is Kenworth radio has XM on it but driver must subscribe. I now would hate to do without that for music, weather, and traffic in major cities. Millis has roomier trucks but I don't like that they force drivers many miles out of route to avoid tolls but don't pay those off-route miles.

 

Took orientation and was given a brand new western star triple axle. asked how many miles and they said park it over there, and you'll get 4000 a week, "Go home", they said! My company provided masseuse is pulling up the driveway, so I gotta go. Great Company though!
