I didn't anticipate and respond quickly enough. I was coming out of a tunnel onto a downward grade. I waited until I was already pointed downhill and being pushed by the trailer before downshifting. Obviously, this is completely my fault. I couldn't get it into the gear I wanted and couldn't get the RPMs right to go back into the previous gear without letting the truck roll too fast. So I wound up spending too long out of gear and relying on the brakes before I could juggle it back into gear. If you have a load, that is a big no-no. It's not at all what I meant to do, but a big lesson was definitely learned.
When I came back to town and enrolled in more drive training, my instructor worked on downshifting in many different situations. Lots of hill practice...
Help me pick: CRST or May?

Probably May but they do micromanage the hell out of you. I used to work with a guy at my last LTL job who started with them and he told me all about it.
I'd try Watkins Shepard too. They actually aren't bad for a starter company and give you a tad more leeway to do things as you see fit. Some of their trucks have APU's and some don't but they don't have an idle policy anyway. They give you a route to follow and fuel stops to make, but honestly they ain't gonna scream at you if you have to deviate from it for a legitimate reason. No driver trainers either. You pass 10 day orientation you go solo. -
i would go solo if i could. better than no sleep for three days while truck moves. so May over Crst
-
Better yet, you can check out the CSA scores of CRST vs May Trucking.
Here's CRST numbers https://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS/Data/carrier.aspx?enc=FDevaTiNUWc=
Here's May Trucking https://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS/Data/carrier.aspx?enc=TBb/R0V2K/E=
Neither one of them look that hot right now. However, CRST is off the chart bad on their scores. -
Just as an update - Tentatively, I'm accepted at May. This is pending a few bits of info, but I got a 'so far, so good' on Friday. CRST hasn't called since Monday.
I can see some good things about teaming, especially if I'm with someone who knows more than I. If I'm in a patch of trouble, I have someone to ask about it. It also sounds to me like teams get all the good dispatches, but I don't know.
May seems the most willing to give me a shot. I also had a couple of conversations with System Transport. They stated they wanted me to be able to lift 100 lbs to shoulder height in order to pass their agility test. I went to a nearby rec center and tried it with weights, but couldn't hold it long at satisfactory height. Obviously, I need to work out a lot more. Overcooked pasta could lift better than that.
I went to the May Trucking site and looked at the trucks they use. All of them have a 'Pro Driver Premium Package' on them. Does anyone know what that includes? -
Pro driver premium pack means they are the tractors with dbl longer bunks and dbl closets, etc. It's what they refer to as a condo interior. More spacious. They also have bunk heaters but no apu.
WoofWagon Thanks this.
