Looking around at new trucks lately, I notice a lot of the Peterbilts at least are being spec'd with 18 speed Fullers. I enjoy a 13 and haul meat and run 80% in the eastern 2/3 of the US and have no intention of heavy haul. Do any of you care to share your thoughts on the 18 if you have experience with them, especially with a 13 as the [preferred] alternate choice. I understand the shift pattern and it would appear it can perhaps be shifted like a 13 if desired and weight/grade allow? What/where is it's primary strength over a 13? Add a significant amount of weight? Thanks.

No difference in weight. Just same basic transmissions with few extra Torrington bearings instead of flat washers to facilitate splitting gears in low side without messing up gears...so find truck specced like you want and if 18 ...just wait til high side to move splitter and it will be just like 13
-
put the 13 knob on an forget its a 18
cetanediesel Thanks this. -
They are pretty much the same box only with the 18 speed you can split the bottom half of the box as well as the top, so this gives you more choices of gears. Also you get an extra deep reduction gear. The shift pattern is exactly the same. 18 speeds in Australia are pretty much standard, it is rare to find anything else.
Most people shift the 18 like a 13 but the gears are good to have when you need them. -
Difference in cost, not that much difference in weight.
If you run off the Interstates loaded heavy, you will like the 18. It also has the low in reverse, nice for backing hard places. -
So I guess the big hole final output RPM of the 18 is the same as the 13 (at a given engine RPM)?

Everything ont he upper side is the same, the ratios on the lower side are different.

IMHO--U will like the 18 Better n a 13 once u get used to it--lots of choices in diff situations--especially @low speed--like pkg lots 4 example--mt trl top side of 3d ride all the way thru whse lot etc--like an auto---lots of others but think u get the idea--Good Luck
STexan Thanks this. -
If i want to go supper slow for a back i just ride the brake and if the engine lugs at all i ride the clutch to. Continued riding of clutch and brake will damage them, but for a short amount of time its not bad. Just be carefull not to lurch it. that being said, the 18 does have a lower low then the 13

I think it's funny that the gears in the 13 show as being different ratios, if they were actually different how are they exactly the same on the high side between the two trannys.
