My company (I deliver for a foodservice company) just installed these Xata Turnpike GPS units in the trucks. It uses a Droid app on my phone and is pretty easy to use so far. Anyone have any experience with the Xata GPS units? Would love to hear some feedback on them and if anyone has had any problems.

I don't know exactly how this setup works but upon a cursory examination of the system, i have a lot of problems with it. It seems a federally mandated system that COMPANIES are financially responsible to deal with are leveraging an employee's device and internet access as a primary component of the system. Even if the company reimbursed 100% of the cell phone plan/tax costs, I'd have a problem with such tracking software that is intended for company use, being on MY cell phone. I can't see the driver personally getting any "personal" benefit out the system to justify the other loss of privacy and cost obligations to the driver.

If the company issues a company authorized smartphone to all drivers, with no "security deposit" requirements, I suppose that would be OK.

But I may be mis-understanding the how the system works.

We have it here at Coast To Coast running about 125 trucks works well easy to use and takes the guessing game out of logs. DOT officers seem to not bother us as much either because we use XATA

We got issued Samsung Galaxy S4's to use with the program. I agree I'd have a problem if i was using my phone with it. Right now we just have regular flip phones so its kind of a cool upgrade that we're getting these 200 dollar phones to replace our 20 dollar phones.

What do you mean by this? Our VP of Operations is looking for some feedback on it.

They can know how fast you see going at any location. It can also see hard breaking. Just think about how much data a computer can gather with access to GPS, gyroscope, and ecm.

I guess you have to look at it from their point of view. If you owned the trucking company, wouldn't you want to be able to track and protect your asset? I understand it's potentially costing you hours/money. Or do you have some kind of performance incentive?

Go here www.safersys.org/CompanySnapshot.aspx and enter 076600 in DOT number. That's Quality Carriers. Got to their BASICS , click HOS Compliance and see all the violations they got for Onboard Recording Device violations and failure to show past 7 days. QC uses Xata Turnpike. There are places you cannot get a signal to log in. Without logging in you have no access to previous data.
E-logs do NOT get you a free ride at scales. Check the different states QC got violations in.

There has to be discretion used doing this. Some drivers will not tolerate undue harassment, receiving explanations for every hard breaking or being dictated what percentage of time they should be using cruise control.
Drivers with excessive speeding , idling , and hard braking should be dealt with.
Everyone has reason to hard brake from time to time. There is no need to bring every case up.
