Just curious, how common is it to use an independent truck dispatch? Does anyone have experience using one? Do you know anyone who uses them?

Just like any dispatch office the good the bad and the ugly if you use them and you reject the loads they offer you most likely you will get Dumped
-
In all honesty, you are the only one that can negotiate a broker load to make it profitable. You are the O/O and you know what you need to make, and a broker will negotiate a cheaper price with a dispatcher then an actual driver.
-
The majority of these so called "independent dispatchers" are failed O/O's.... Do you want them negotiating your rate????

Thanks guys. But is this a common arrangement or is it pretty rare?

Depends. I have one truck running dedicated dispatch for a company right now. So far not bad last one was a complete nightmare! Lady claimed 2.00/running mile had that truck on there a month. 1.34/running mile. 2 days before I pulled that truck off driver sat in ST JOE no for 28 hours waiting on a load. I was not happy with them at all.
So far I've seen the loads for the new one that truck is running with and it appears a lot better. I'm figuring on this week about 1.98/running mile already and it had a 110 mile deadhead to pick up the first load. They're all different and when you find a good one stick with it.
After seeing what some have made off me I'm half bound to park my truck and do it for a living...but alas I have a brain, its only partially functional but that doesn't qualify for dispatch. Your not allowed to have any brain at all. -
So out of curiosity , I know Brokers have a bad rap ... I have been there and done that , but wouldn't truckers want someone on their side to truly help them keep that truck moving and making them money , because any way you look at it no one is making money of that truck is sitting . So with that being said the smaller fleets or the single O/O that have to spend their time in an office or at truckstop on the phone trying to find the next load from the next broker that is going to take any where from 10-25 % of the load off the top or tell you the load is gone . What would be so wrong with having a service that can help keep you moving and give you options for services that would best fit your individual needs . Say you are paying a flat fee either weekly or montly or a % of the load and you didnt have to any of it , you can just get back to driving , hell I'd be all over that !

With todays technology of smart phones, tablets, wi-fi etc.... Why give up a slim margin, when it can easily be done by ones self....
areelius, rollin coal and RGRTim Thank this. -

Faxing is dinosaur tech. Hardly any one uses them. Paid dispatch services are a waste of money. Who in their right mind is going to have a stranger deal with the money side. Once a company's reputation is set and good, you won't have to look for freight. In fact my little carrier that I own has not used a loadboard in 5 years. The freight finds us.
