No, you'll just be another truck in my way. Join the military, any branch, pay your dues and then see what there is out there. You will be surprised how many choices there will be then.

Don't do it. CDL is handy to have but a poor career choice. Get a careless or get an impaired charge in your personal vehicle and then you are out of a job and not qualified to do anything else except dispatch. Voila, you just wasted whatever time you put in and now you are to old to start over in another field.
Not to mention you will never see your kids and probably lose everything in a divorce. -
A year ago I would have said maybe but with the new regulations that have come out recently and the ones in the pipeline (22 to be exact, 20 of which will bring further restrictions) I would say no, or at the very least wait a while.

Every once in a while I look at some pics I took in various places and ALMOST miss OTR.....
Not making anywhere NEAR enough money as a Hot Shot driver. But considering what I made with PAM I am not doing TOO bad. Sure is great sleeping in my own bed and being home most weekends! -
Why not work overseas? The first 80 thousand is tax free.

The thing is I doubt he'll find a job in his field... Business is one of the worst fields to find a job without experience or knowing someone in a company. I did the college thing 2 years but dropped out cause human resources don't care about a piece of paper anymore. Plus I always wanted to truck for awhile.

I used to ask myself this question from time to time, but I learned a lot about the opportunity costs and risks of this industry as well as how much dedication it requires and I am at the conclusion that this is not something I would want to do at the age of 36. I used to teach at a public high school before my contract was not renewed recently. It bothered me because I wanted to keep making positive impacts on kids' lives. I live alone and I considered trucking until it became clear that one does not simply drive truck for a year. I do not live in debt (blessed) and I knew if I got into trucking I would be in the hole quick.
Bottom line; make that degree pay for itself. -
The thing is, I really want to start my own business. I have realized that working a 9-5 office job and wearing a suit and tie everyday isn't for me. I'm thinking about going out to the oilfields, working like crazy, living like a bum and saving up until I reach about $250k. I don't want to be a trucker my whole life and definitely wouldn't want to do it if I had a wife and kids but I won't have a wife and kids for at least 10 more years. I'm interested in this because I see the oilfields as the best way to make a lot of money NOW so I can start my own business. If I get a job for $35k with my degree I might be able to save up $5k per year, which isn't enough in my eyes. What do you all think?

Truckman, thanks for the response. On these forums you hear of guys getting jobs in the oilfields for $16+/hr at 70+ hrs a week. At 70 hours/week that is $71k a year, starting pay. They say after you get 6 months experience you can make $20+/hr. Maybe they are just a select few but if it worked for them I don't get why it can't work for me. Also, I'll be ok living away from home. I would be able to handle the job no problem, I'm more concerned with how much money I would be making.
