Unprofessional?????

IMO if its just blocks away...not under a load, not gonna abandon the truck, not even in the same state where your personal vehicle is... etc.....i find nothing wrong with it....its all in how you go about it....

 

I run my families trucking company and I don't find it unprofessional at all. In fact if I'm around I like to do the interview in your (other company's) truck. Being that I drove for ten years I can get a pretty good read on a driver by the way they care for the truck they drive and live in now.

My dad, when he was alive he use to love checking out the equipment other companies were using. He was like a kid in a candy store and 99% of the time he would hire the drive.

 

If I did the hiring for a megacarrier, I wouldn't care as long as the driving record was clean and I met my quota.

If I worked for a small company, I would let him fill out the application and mount it to my "Wall of Shame"

 

Hey Ghost Ryder, EVERY single time (and it has only had to happen twice in my 26 years) that I have done this, I have been hired by a better company. My pay went up, and I was driving better trucks. You have to play hardball with trucking companies who wish to play hardball. Like someone else here said, ...stand up for yourself and you will get what you should be getting for your time and your experience. Otherwise, we are no better than your average Wally-World employee.

If you have the ability to get on here and debate this, you probably could have had your online application sent and approved by now and probably be on hold for your first phone interview. I'm just sayin'...

 

Of all the guys who said they did it did your employer know you were doing it or did you not have the common courtesy to tell them?

 

Why? If it's within your employers rules for out-of-route driving there's no need to inform them. As far as just sending a blind app, that doesn't even begin to give you the same level of assurance that a visit to the terminal does that your not just blundering into a transportation disaster disguised as a trucking company.

 

Everytime someone comes to fill out an application and driving another companies truck I let them fill it out and throw it in the trash. It is very unprofessional not to mention a waste of fuel and your current employers time.

 

Friend, common courtesy is a two-way street in my book. And my answer is, "No." Look, there are companies out there that do try to do what they say they are going to do. I have no beef with those types. However, (and many will attest to this) there are a lot of companies out there today that only consider themselves and the driver be ######!

The way they see it is they can get someone to cover that seat the very next day. These companies, I do have a beef with. Unfortunately, (especially in my area) these types make up the majority. They make a lot of promises to a veteran driver, but at the end of the day they treat you just like they would any newbie! I don't play those games.

I am a reasonable guy. If I have a problem, I always go to them first to try and get it worked out. If they don't want to work with me--if they want to play the game of hardball--I've become quite good at that game as well. In the end, I do what I have to do to take care of my family and pay those that I gave my word that I would pay. Too, each of us are going to have our own opinions on a subject such as this one, and I say, "To each his or her own."
