Hello all, I have an A cdl with hazmat, tanker, and doubles endorsements. I drove a garbage truck for 3 years than had a 3 year break working construction before coming to the bakken oilfield where i have done 1 year hauling non hazmat tanker and the last 6 months hauling crude oil. I was wondering how well oilfield tanker experiance translates to OTR tanker hireability?, is 6 months hazmat experiance enough to land a decent job?, is 60k a year reasonable?
Enough tanker experience?

You shouldn't have any problem at all landing a good $60K tanker job. In fact, SVTN just hired a new CDL school graduate that posted on here.

If you have no OTR experience you will start out as a newbie that was just out of cdl school. Most companies won't count any local experience at all, so will more than likely get put with a trainer for a set amount of time. You probably won't make 60 grand a year starting out but as time goes by your pay will go up and it also depends on who you work for and what you haul. You probably are better off staying where you are at if you need to make 60 grand a year or better.

Ive been very fortunate in the oilpatch, ND has been good to me, i am greatful, but it's time for a change. The wife and I have just been introduced to our brand new baby girl, flying home for a week once every 2-3 months just isnt going to cut it anymore. Im looking for somthing stable with more frequent family time.

I would not hire you because you have no OTR experience.
My company requires 5 years OTR Tanker experience.
There are companies that will hire you to haul Haz-Mat Tanker with no experience, but normally you have to live within 50-100 miles of their terminals.
SNI does Chem-Tank: They will hire you with the experience you have and you should make $60k no problem.
Good Luck!benwymer Thanks this. -
Yes, I am looking to relocate, our home is in Western WA, im still in ND now living in the truck, wife and daughter are back in WA, no decent paying tanker jobs listed in WA reguardless of exp. I've been looking at listings in Texas and Kansas, trying to find an area with a decent income to cost of living ratio. Housing prices in ND are too high, otherwise I would move the family out, and stay in the patch.

In many instances, local drivers deal with more traffic, more delivering and picking up, and generally do more of the harder aspects of trucking, minus the long, open highway driving. It would seem to me that a local driver would be more than qualified to go into an OTR position and do well.superpet39 and Twicebit Thank this. -
