HIV is not a major issue if under control as far as driving is concerned.
Problem is that hygiene and diet are very important for a HIV positive person and to keep these standards at optimal level on the road is challenging.
I employ HIV positive drivers who seem healthy and put in 14 hours a day no problem.
In fact some of these guys have more endurance then some HIV negative drivers.
What a lot of people don't understand about HIV is that if under control it has virtually no effect on how a person looks or performs.
Only at advanced stages does it become evident.
To reach an advanced stage can take many years.
In fact we don't know how long a person can stay health while being HIV positive because we are still counting but we do know there are people health after more then 20 years of being HIV positive.
If that person was energetic and strong before becoming HIV positive that is how they will be after (if controlled).
If they were lethargic and needed 10h sleep before that is how they will be after.

Oh man, I really wish I could have read these comments. I have been busy with other stuff for a couple of hours.
-
The HIV won't be a issue itself, but the meds you take for it might be. Considering the rest of your backround, I'd say no, you don't have a chance. At least not with the good companies anyway (IE Walmart).
-
You may have to disclose the fact that you have HIV no matter what you want. If the physical asks if you have any illnesses and you say no, they can fire you. They ask what meds your on and why you take them. So be prepared to disclose your status. Like I said just be upfront about it. As far as your HIV your liable to get more flack from other drivers than the company.

I appreciate your feedback. With regard to the issues of my past, its just that, my past. Falling asleep at the wheel, drugs, all 10 years ago when I was a teenager. The most recent license suspension didn't even have to do with driving directly, but the commonwealth of Mass allows for suspensions when I failed to show up for my court appearance in CIVIL COURT. There are circumstances surrounding how that happened which I am happy to share in detail with any recruiter I speak with. But I am not getting into here as there is no reason. The meds I take are designed to have the least amount of side effects, and if its on the DOT list as an exclusionary drug than so be it. Again thanks for your opinion, I appreciate hearing what folks have to say. This is why I started the thread, so I can get feedback. I doubt you and I would get along if we met, but thanks anyway.

Btw op, I'm not trying to come down on you because you have HIV.

It occurs to me it might not be the best fit for me. But I think it is worth exploring since I have a real interest. Thanks for the feedback.

This isn't a industry of 2nd chances, as I'm sure you're probably figuring out.
-
You can still work in the industry, if you really want to. Just not as a driver. Have you considered being a dispatcher?
-
Thank you! And I fully agree with you points. I don't think it will effect my performance. I think I will actually do great at this. My life expectancy is actually the same provided I keep it under control. I will be an old guy, retiring with whatever I save and Social Security (if that still exists in 40 years..) The meds available these days are GREAT!
