He will be running mid west, eastern seaboard, south west and of course Canada (east of rockies)

So? What does he think they should be? Anyone who's driven 100 miles knows how they want their truck set up
-
Unless you're pulling a specialized trailer you can pull it with whatever you want
-
Its his first truck purchase and is wanting peoples opinions to see if he has the right idea. Any helpful ideas would be appreciated. Hes been driving for 20 years 8 of which have been flat bed but always in a company truck with no input into specs. Again....some helpful opinions of what others drive would be appreciated.

is he going to run ca? makes a difference on the year that you would want. if staying out of ca. 379 pet 550 cat pre 2004 13 or 18 speed 355 rears 11X22.50 rubber or 390 rears 11X24.5 rubber. 13000lbs steer 40000lbs rears. 60" sleeper. driven right it will get you great fuel and should have empty weight of 17500 lbs if the rest of the specs are right. lots of them around and priced right. lots cheaper to fix than the new motors. less problems also. good luck
truckerswife1973 Thanks this. -
Lot of different flatbed work , is he looking to haul lumber , steel , heavy haul on the highway , precast concrete panels on construction sites , pipe on 1 of Ontarios mew proposed pipeline jobs ?
In Ontario look at used trucks from the various FLATBED outfits and that will give you an outline of how they are specd , J-LINE has some listed on KIJJI , METRO Freightliner in Hamilton have some from WHITE OAK
If he is driving 1 now its not hard to figure out the specs on it -
Make it light. A big Volvo will have trouble scaling 48,000# with an aluminum trailer.

I am looking for the same information about the "best" specs for a flatbed. I am looking to move from company to O/O and am looking for some criteria that helps whittle down all the choices as I am not too particular about make or engine. I'm looking for the most mechanically sound investment and I believe having the correct specs will help by saving money with fuel costs. I am aware of the specs for the company truck I'm in now. I am not aware of why the choose them or why they might be correct for me. Also, could tell me what is meant by "O/O specs"?

I run a 389 Pete 265 wb with a 485 hp isx turned to 630, 48" flat top with 24.5 rubber. Pulling a 53 ft step. 32,500# slam full of fuel with 20 chains and binders. Never had a prob.
