I'm loading up the truck getting ready to roll out of Missouri tonight for Abilene. My physical, drug test and interview are scheduled for Thursday. Friday I'm headed to San Angelo to look at houses with the wife. I never thought I would be leaving the fire service but times have changed and I need to move on. I'm excited about a new opportunity and a great career. Wish me luck! To those who are looking for a job in Texas, do your research, have all your qualifications ready and be honest about them. They will know more about you than you think when it's all said and done. Be confident when you speak to a prospective employer.... It goes a long way. Dress professional for an interview, you are suppose to be a professional driver, dress like one. Fill out the applications in their entirety, don't leave blanks.. It just leaves room for questions. Include any certificates or awards from previous employment regardless if it was a driving job. Show you aren't just the status quo or a "bump on a log" and you take your job seriously. Make sure your application is legible and triple check to see there are no mistakes before submitting it. Don't bad mouth previous employers in the interview, nobody wants to hire a disgruntled employee. If it didn't work out leave it at that. Speak professionally and avoid slang terms and obviously cursing! You aren't at a truckstop with a nameless Joe complaining about the worlds problems, you are selling yourself and your experience. CONFIDENCE... CONFIDENCE...CONFIDENCE goes a long way. Believe in yourself and the rest should fall into place. Good luck in your searches, time to go practice what I preach!

What would you recommend as proper dress attire? Please advise.

I would advise khaki pants and either a button down shirt tucked in or a nice polo style shirt. Be clean shaven.... Especially if entering the oilfield sector (requirement for wearing a respirator) I'm just saying don't wear crappy jeans and a Duck Dynasty Tshirt that says Beaver Commander! Walmart sells khakis for about $10-12 and a polo might set you back another $10-15. The higher paying companies are looking for professionals, not pulses. I'm not trying to dictate how you go about your career path, but I have never been told "we will call you" or "thanks for your interview but we have gone with another candidate." I've landed every good job I have applied for. I'm not a career expert..... Just someone who has been there done that and helping anyone who will take constructive criticism.

Well everything went great today. The interview was definitely not what I was expecting, but went well. I don't want to say much about it as they have their own way of "screening" prospective drivers. I was offered the position pending my drug test results and the companies background check results. Wife and I drove down from Abilene to San Angelo to look at houses this evening. Right now we are shacked up at the Motel 6 which I don't recommend to anyone but its the cheapest you will find at $80 a night. Hotels here are going for upwards of $200 a night! More house hunting tomorrow then the long drive home until I get the call with a start date. I did not ask about the accredited driving school we talked about in an earlier post, I was pre-occupied with the interview at hand. I apologize and will find out an answer soon. Seems like a great company and I'm looking forward to starting soon.

Just pulled in to the house 1850 miles later. I'm ready for a nap! We found a great place to rent, but I will warn anyone planning on moving to San Angelo with pets that is nearly impossible to find pet friendly rentals, if you do the security deposit is astronomical. Homes are getting harder to find there and the "boom" is expected to grow exponentially soon. Even the small towns surrounding the city are filled up. Do your research before you go, motels average over $150 a night. You can find a few around 80-90 but they are nothing fancy. Lots of great places to eat and plenty of recreational attractions are close by. I was told the public school system has gone down hill since the influx of oilfield workers, that's something to consider for those moving a family. There are definitely plenty of jobs as I had guys offering me positions in the oilfield while we were talking in the motel parking lot. Hope this helps anyone looking to relocate there.

San Angelo is a nice place. The boom is making housing ridiculous. Wish I was in real estate.

Housing here in San Angelo hasn't gotten as bad as midland/Odessa....Yet

Houseing was one of the major factors in decideing were we would go. One of the things we looked into was a travel trailer( rv ) ,some are pretty nice. In a way they are cheaper than renting a house or apartment. ( depending on size, you can get redicules with them) with the added bonus that if you take good care of it you can get a good portion of your money back.
He finally decided that he'd rather just "make a liveing, not a killing" with water hauling in the dfw area. That way I am more likely to find a good job also.Houseing is still expensive, but easier to find.
