Ultimately, if you take a unit that is unfit, not permitted properly, or otherwise the paperwork is not current or correct, you, as the driver are responsible. You will be held accountable by the DOT or police plain and simple. I cannot put it any plainer than that. The company will be fined as well, plus other charges could be filed against the principles, but the driver will be charged for whatever the offense was, whether that's taking an unsafe vehicle on the road or operating authorities not current.

You will get companies that try to operate under the radar. The best defense against these companies is a forum such as this to get the word out. Sooner or later that company will either go insolvent due to no drivers will work for them, or, miracle of miracles, will see the error of their ways and clean up their act. A good, competant, and safe driver can find a job anywhere and be welcomed. One doesn't have to work for companies such as we're discussing.

Just yesterday I noticed a slack adjuster on my trailer was way out of adjustment. This was on the post trip. I sent in the message stating that we needed road side service. Well I went to take a shower and they called my student and told him to drive it 10 miles to a shop and have it fixed. I then called back and told them that we would not move a truck with a known brake problem. The guy on the breakdown line apologized and said he misunderstood and that he would get road repair out immediately.

Point of this story is that sometimes it's a misunderstanding of what the problem is. My student thought he had to move and the breakdown guy didn't understand the problem. Now was the breakdown guy trying to be sly? Maybe, but I would have stuck to my guns in any event. Company policy and DOT policy were on my side. Make sure the problem is clear and always stick by your assessment. You are the one out there.

Another point to all this is please do a good post trip. I saved lots of time by discovering it then instead of the morning.

unfortunately, it's your fault. trailers miss regs quite often and that's a part of pre-trip. trailer boxes get opened for paperwork or by wind and regs get lost. you should have refused to move it or arranged pick up of faxed copy of that reg to any ts. they, of course, could have paid that ticket for you as their business expense.
i do agree with guys, that the name of mentioned enterprise should have stopped your hand before you touched their application form.

Yes, thats what they teach in driving school, but in the real world, if you want to make money you take the load and dont worry about it. Most larger or mid sized companies have these things checked, but you know the small-crook companies dont care. They tell you take it or get your stuff out of the truck.

Yes, that name would be enough to deter me. BTW, federal law (dont have it in front of me) states that when a driver is terminated the company must get the driver to the driver's home-state line, no further.

Well folks, there are always 2 sides to every story. I am Cathy and I am Boss Lady Transport. The original poster, is a disgruntled driver. Let me tell you a little story about him and the Mrs.
They were a referral from another driver that I currently employ. (Why would they refer a friend/relative if we were a bad company and still be working here?).
This gentleman and his wife were hired to run East-West coast loads and run about 4500 miles per week or better with our 2011 Volvo 670 and 2011 Reefer trailer. We allowed them to use our truck as their taxi to get them started by returning their previous company's truck 120 miles away and back. On their first load, they needed to get home, yes their first load. We made arrangements for Mr. to drop off Mrs. on the way through, pick up a load for the weekend and pick her up on the way back. They didn't follow instructions and resulted in lots of lost revenue.
Their 3rd load, they were 8 hours late for pick up. They called and I asked them some diagnostic questions (do you have lights?) and they didn't know. It was important that they get to safety and call me back with update. I will get service truck if needed. They disappeared. They had "cell phone issues". My patience is starting to thin. The problem was a blown fuse.
On their 4th load, they "hit something" in the road. They don't know what but it was enough to destroy the oil pan. Yes, destroy the oil pan. That bill was $2,600.
That evening, Mr. was having chest pains and went to the hospital. He can no longer drive because of his health, so now Mrs. must drive. They are now a day late for this delivery.
Guess what, they get stopped at the scale by DOT. They are a team and got shut down for logs 10 miles to delivery. How does that happen? Simple. Mr. didn't do his logs.....at all.
Sure, the registration was missing for the trailer. Not sure why it wasn't in the box, however, I do believe that is part of a pre-trip inspection? How am I suppose to know it's missing unless someone tells me? I faxed it immediately upon request.
So now, my team truck is shut down (not for registration or equipment, but for logs) for 10 hours. I now have to pay a local company to come pick up the trailer and deliver the freight nearly two days late. Can you understand my frustration here? That cost me another $500 and can you imagine how my customer feels at this point?
So, Mr. has to get home to see his Dr. and they would like me to find them a load going to their home, which is almost 400 miles away from my office. He needs to see his doctor, he's not sure he's physically fit to drive, and now Mrs. isn't thinking she is physically fit to drive either. Hmm. I'm not comfortable with that. I will put them on a bus to get them home but I don't think I want my equipment to be 400 miles away with no drivers. Seems logical so far?
My husband offers to drive them home in our car but we find a bus station and put them on the bus. Yes, I paid for the bus ticket with my credit card and charged it back to them. Am I wrong for doing so? Should I have to pay for their transportation twice?
They went home, were suppose to go to doctor the next day and call us back. They didn't. I paid his fine out of my account and charged it back to him. The fine was for logs, not trailer registration.
I held their paycheck since they were out of service, common practice in this industry. They wrote an email quitting. I went to clean out the truck. OMG! It was an absolute mess. Just ask any of the 4 drivers that saw first hand. They also stole the brand new mattress I put in the truck ($200) and it costs me $300 to have it professional cleaned and aired out. They were in the truck for 2 weeks.
Maybe I did something wrong here? I am certainly open to discussion and find myself to be pretty reasonable.
This couple put me through hell for the 2 weeks they were in my truck. I gave them more chances than anyone else would have.
And also, The name is catchy and cute and memorable and was given to me by one of my drivers.

There are always two sides to every story. ALWAYS. Thats why I take every story posted on this forum with a pinch of skepticism. Until the other party states their case, a story is only half true.

Less than a year experience and this is the "worst" company you have worked for?

So, how many have there been?

    Yep, two sides.

As many shady trucking companies there are, I think the ratio of shady drivers is a lot higher. They make responsible drivers look bad, but perhaps if the pay wasn't so low, overall, from these companies, I might have some sympathy for their plight. As it stands, I don't.
