Leasing an older tractor

Landstar is one, Jones Express too, they don't care about age as long it passes a thorough DOT insp. You pick your loads. I leased to both of them yrs ago. I think CRST flatbed div. used to be pretty good too, I used to hear good things about em.

Of course without a DPF filter you can't go into CA, but who wants to, right? I do if I need to, but am considering at going back to an older model trk and just stay away from CA totally. Good luck.

 

I'm fairly certain Landstar requires you to have an eobr now which requires an electronic truck. If I remember correctly crst went to or is going to eobr.

 

Landstar requires an EOBR for all new hires, which means an electronic engine.

As for your requests of stepdeck, regional, LTL ... those are not going to cover your fuel costs, let alone make you a living. That's like saying you want a job, but only want to work Mon, Wed and Thurs, and only on rainy days when it's 45* or colder.

All joking aside, finding a place to lease on an older 359 will not be the problem. The problem lies in your requirements of the company. Running regional is doable, but only running a step and only doing LTL is going to be very hard to find. Why not broaden your search and look for a place that gets you home on weekends and go from there?

 

I have contractors that make a living pulling step decks regionally. I am not trying to recruit because I don't thing Medford would work very well for our operation. I am just saying it can be done...and we get our drivers home on weekends.

 

i worked for 2 companies 2 years doing regional and was home MOST weekends. if i wasn't broke down or doing a cross country trip.

now that i see what the rates are. i'm dumbfounded as to how last company is still in business after 30 years. they've lost half there trucks. and sold off 1/4 of there trailers. and still hauling. my first company is no more. they've switched to bellies and hauling dirt locally now.

i think it's doable. but you've gotta have the freight or the customers. out in the west. neither one pays. and those 2 companies i worked for. didn't seem to want to haul anything but the usual cheap wood, sheetrock, and steel. not that there's anything else to be had around here anyways.

 

Thought about Landstar too. What do they offer ? 65 % from gross or something like that? To me its a robbery in daylight on the highway

Thy pay me 77% plus 100% of billed surcharge which works out to about 85%, mostly haul loads for their direct customers, fuel right now is about .45 to .50 less than cash price at TA and Petro. and I get 35% up front and the rest on Tuesday after the bills go in.

 

I believe most engines went electronic around 1995?? Anyone know for sure??

Yes, 1994 was the electronic changeover mostly (95 model year trucks) and they quit making the 359 in 1987
