Okay... here's the deal. In 2008 the automotive industry (except Ford) went to both the America and Canadian Governments and begged for handouts that came out of your and my pocket. They were too big to fail we were told. The economy will crash we were told. The automotive worker is the backbone of both economies. Really? Let's do a little math. The average automotive worker in Canada makes an average of $34/hr. They are responsible for about $10 dollars worth of scrap metal before that piece is put on the line and welded to a chasis. If they were to be laid off tomorrow they would never find a job that pays even half of what they make now. Why is that? Because the are unskilled workers. But, they are also the backbone of the economy.
The average truckdriver makes the equivalent of about $18/hr. We are responsible, the minute we climb into our cab for $250 000 worth of truck (that's hauling empty), the lives of the people on the road, the cargo we are hauling, the upkeep of the truck. Our civilian license is directly connected to our CDL and vice versa. If we were to quit our jobs tomorrow (because a good driver doesn't get fired) we would be working the next day. Because we are skilled labor. When the automotive industry was bailed out we were forced to take pay cuts to keep our jobs. No bail out for us. I myself lost close to $15 000/year in pay.
If you calculate what an automotive worker makes during a regular 40 hour week they gross close to $1300/week. If you calculate what a driver makes in a 60 hour work week we gross $1033/week. Now, add those extra 20 hours we work a week into the month we are literally working 2 extra weeks a month and still making less than an automotive worker.
If the automotive industry were to shut down for a month how much of a blip do you think it would make to the North American econony? Probably not that much. Now, imagine if every driver in North America were to shut down for 1 week. How much do you think the economy would be affected? It's time we took a week off. Don't block roads or bridges. Don't picket companies. Just take a week off. Call in sick. Spend it with the family who rarely sees you. Let our countries know that without us there is no more economy. LET'S ALL JUST TAKE A WEEK OFF.
It's Time for a Week Off

And how many people that read this can go a week without a paycheck ? Not many....
That's why a shutdown, strike or week off has not happened... remember May 08 ? There were 3 of us,at the truckstop...... only 3 and no one else i knew sat elsewhere.... they drove and "wished they could" for that one day. So who could last a week ? or even 3 days ? Maybe someone that has house, car, child support payments finished. Most have 1 or all three to cover and will continue to have payments on much of their life. -
What happened on May 08?

If God forbid, I were to get laid off or terminated from my job, would have about six months worth of income. to live off of. I am currently trying to build that to a years worth, it is quite difficult.

We need to look long term. I have a family, rent, car payments, utilites, groceries, etc. I bring home around $700/week. I can't afford a week off either. But,if Egypt can overthrow two different governments in as many years, I think a huge statement made by ALL drivers would open lines of conversation not seen ever. Remember, just the argument of overtime being over 60 hours is based on a statute that is over 80 years old. Look at all the reform that has been made in the world in 80 years and we are still being dictated by archaic laws that applied to our great grandfather's generation. Who is on our side? No one. It is time that we be compensated for what we truly deserve.

We the truck drivers are the backbone of any countries economy, we are also what moves money in any economy. Think of all money transactions we are linked to just by doing what we do. I think a rally on Washington DC's lawn for ONE day would say the same thing, if not more, than taking a week off.

I think that the facts are a bit off, these three companies were never the backbone of the country, Toyota, Honda and others are. While many of us will never reach the benefit of working at one of these three companies or make what they make (which is a lot more than $34 an hour - try $80 with all the benefits), we have two important obstacles to overcome, the first is we are too fractured in this industry to think about a unified action, and the other is too many have differing opinions on how to solve these issues.

Okay I'll chime in here. Were talking about a shutdown right? Right! Well you're never going to get all the drivers to shutdown because we can't afford it right? Right! So here's how you get every truck in america to stop for your week. Hack the credit card, and fuel card system. Shut that down for 7 days and all hell breaks loose. Wipe everything temoprarily. No fuel cards work nobdoys gonna fuel. Yes you have a few that still pay cash or write a check but that would take 98% of trucks off the road. That would be the most effective way to shut everything down. I knew what are the truck stops going to do just start giving away diesel? No I don't think so. That's going to be the most viable solution for shutting down for a week. Its also not as far fetched and hard as it sounds. If computer hackers can break into the FBI mainframe in a movie, there's somebody that can do it in real life. I'd say that's your best bet.

First off, where do you get 250,000 from. My rig is worth 25K and my trailer 5K. Secondly..."wouldn't it be awesome if we all went on strike for just one week"? It been talked about to death. Unless you got the mega carriers on board to stop all there trucks O/O would be a drop int he bucket. Secondly, it would cause a bit of problems, but most stores stock a weeks supply of goods. in most areas of trucking it would be logistical inconvenience, not mass panic pay the truckers more, they deserve it.

That's why you hack the fuel card and credit card system. Megas ain't moving without their fuel cards.
