Was called in on my day off, so I can drop a line... Well he was sent packing after he broke the trucks axel don't know how he did it, but when he did they flat out said forget waiting on corp. pack your bags and go.... The guys in the group are safe. Esp. my son.... Update: He is having problems with 90 degree backing up.. whatever that is all else is going fine down shifting sucks but he is getting the grip of it - I just told him that it takes time no one can just jump in a rig and run with it - doesn't work like that it's not a car - won't stop on a dime, or do whorleys in a 2 lane road - Practice Practice Practice

Ok...here is your assurance. Your son is going to get harassed, picked on, made fun of and laughed at...a lot. All new drivers are, simply because they are new. As far as his sexual orientation, if he doesn't make a big deal out of it, no one else will either. Yes he is going to hear the general comments, don't let them bother him. As long as he isn't a "flaming queen" he shouldn't have any issues.

In the beginning, yes. There's a tendency to oversteer, i.e., to get the back of the trailer going toward the dock (one does this by turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction one wants the end of the trailer to go) then to keep the steering wheel in this position too long. The trick is to just get the trailer going in the direction one wants then to correct the wheel (by reversing its direction) then to correct again (by reversing again) - back and forth. Takes a bit of getting used to. If he has a good trainer it is not as difficult as the trainer should a) explain what to do beforehand, b) give verbal cues while he's backing, c) give verbal cues immediately before need so your son has a moment to process and correct.

I have watched numerous "trainers" training their charges over the years. Too many are lousy at the explanation beforehand (if they bother at all), and too many give verbal cues too late.

The key with backing up, a jackknife of otherwise, is to have an understanding of what needs to happen (the physics of it, if you will) ahead if time, then to make adjustments and readjustments just before they are seemingly needed. It takes the trailer a few moments to "respond". Waiting till it seems to be the "right time" is usually too late.

Your son will be fine. Most truckers are gay. Don't believe me? Next time you're on the road take notice as to how they cruise down the highway up eachothers #####! They'll try to tell you they're "drafting" but there's only one reason another man would be that close to another mans ###!
